Surrounded by talented prospects:

16. Lucas Giolito (65 rating)

17. DJ Davis (yuck)

18. Corey Seager (65 rating)

19. Michael Wacha (MLB pitcher)

Should have clarified I was referencing the possibility of Gio falling one more spot to the Jays (who I'm assuming would have taken him). I didn't realise Seager went right after Davis. I just threw up in my mouth a bit.

How can you say they have better stuff than Castro? Castro throws 96-98 MPH as a SP with a filthy slider and changeup thats a work in progress

The fastball is really good and might be a 65 pitch. But from everything I've read the slider is slurvy and isn't anywhere close to "filthy". Pitchers who haven't pitched much above SS ball and have one great pitch with below average secondaries aren't going to be too high on prospect lists, its just the way it is.

Noah Syndergaard.

Actually a really solid list, a few odd placements but I can see the reasoning why they put some players where they're ranked.

Plus it's the first list I've seen to not have Archie Bradley in the Top 25, that's automatic bonus points.

Noah Syndergaard.

How is Noah Syndergaard like Miguel Castro? Sure they both have great fastballs but Syndergaard's secondaries have always been better and you have to compare their seasons from when Syndergaard was just finishing SS ball.

Posted
Comparing them at the same age, they both had great fastballs...their 2nd best pitch was their changeup (Castro's being superior)...and their breaking balls need work (Syndergaard's curve was big, slow, and inconsistent).

The comparison is not a bad one.

In 2012 Syndergaard was a lot better than Castro was now (2015). I don't think Castro had a better FB, change or breaking ball than Syndergaard...

Severino is at 30 and consensus is that he's a reliever long term.

That's a two year old assessment that no one will drop (it's no different than the one put on Stroman when he was drafted). People make these assessments and never change them. It's one of the biggest flaws of prospect watching. I'm not saying that he's a sure fire starter but I always like the 20 year old that's coming off a season where they threw 115 innings better than the guy that's has "a starters build" and hasn't thrown more than 50 innings in a season.

How would you rank:

MLB Pipeline

Baseball Prospectus

Baseball America

Keith Law

Fangraphs

? others

I like that BP and Fangraphs don't really do draft coverage as it takes away some of the bias of guys that they incorrectly ranked too high back then. However they are probably a little too much about what players did that season. Not every player that has a bad year should drop right off. Not every player that has a great season will continue with it. In the end they all have their strengths and weaknesses.

The Hurl "Severino was the best pitcher I saw in the minors all year"

The best pitcher that wasn't highly on the radar. 2013 that honour went to Urias. Maybe you should listen to me.

Not sure why the sass Mr. Hurl. I was just saying what you said that I remember, because you are high on Severino. I would like to see him succeed as a SP in the MLB as well.

I respect your vast experience. Must have more years experience than King, GD, me, North, Orgfiller, and Fatcow combined.

In all fairness, the total of all of those is 42.

TheHurl "Severino best under the radar* pitcher I saw all year" vs KLaw "Why would Severino be top 100? Non-Prospect"

Part of what I just said to King is a joke as I'm traditionally really bad when it comes to prospect pitchers, every so often you just see a guy and say wow though (for me batter wise the biggest was Rendon who I saw in college and he just looked so perfect with the bat) When I first came to the Jays boards in around 2004, I was very old school. What BA said was gospel and almost all my prospect knowledge was from them. When i divorced, I immersed myself into prospect watching. I watched 1000's of hours of games in the minors and college. That lasted from 2010 to 2013. At the same time I had learned more and more about stats from the guys on the boards and that helped in figuring some things out looking at the stats (and as much as he was a running joke on the board, I learned a shitload from Project Prospect and Adam Foster...I would have loved to have a group of us take over that site as it was on to something that others didn't look at). I'd say I learned more about prospects in those three years just because I watched so many games.

I'd never suggest that any of you guys do the same method though...watching baseball and playing poker 20 hours a day is not a good life at all. But with knowledge you guys have of baseball stats (which is far beyond what I'll ever have) just watching more baseball you guys will know as much or more than any of these prospect sites.

I probably didn't need the reminder that I'm becoming my Dad. That's it no more personalized stories. I'm going to take Robot training.

They all have their strengths. BP's lists aren't as good as they once were, but their content overall is unmatched. I really like everything McDaniel does. Not all that familiar with BA outside of their lists, which are usually good. Law sucks.

MLB Pipeline has jumped considerably since Callis has been hired. Agreed, with everything else you posted.
