I was an active reader, not poster during Colby's 2013 season. I remember wanting the Jays to lock him up long term. Sure glad AA didn't.

 

One of his biggest strengths is certainly extending current players. I trust he will do the right thing with Donaldson, whatever that might be.

I'm too lazy to check the figures but this should be a bonus to an already under utilized payroll. I believe if it really is going up to 140M then the Jays should have between 10-15M left to work with.

Nothing that great on the FA market anymore anyways. Proably better to save the remaining payroll space to be able to take on a contract via trade.

I think AA is taking a wait and see approach because there's a lot of question marks in spring training in regards to the 5th starter/pen (Delabar, Norris, Estrada, etc.) and also the bench guys (Dirks, Izturis, Travis, etc.)

 

Maybe he'll spend a bit more after the dust settles there or wait til mid season to address a glaring weakness via a trade where he can take on salary. He should have the flexibility to do so if needed this year, especially if a lot of things break right for him in ST.

The guy is so frustrating. He still throws 94, still has the stuff. Convert him into a closer - tell him to aim the ball dead center and fire in as hard as he can - get him to 98mph with movement. Do SOMETHING with the guy. The guy just fell off a cliff. And Delabar - an all-star who was striking out 4 guys an inning. WTF. When he was on he was ridiculous. Batters looked like 5 year olds up there. What kind of drugs were these guys doing to now not be able to hit a barn from 10 feet.

knowing internally they were going a different direction and benching Rasmus......why did this FO not try to get what little value he had and trade him.....even picking up his contract.....instead of paying him. benching him and getting nothing. I question that.

You are assuming they knew which direction they were going with him before the year started, I would disagree considering he put up a 4.6WAR in 2013. You are also assuming that the Jays didnt try and shop him at the deadline for a need, which we will never know if they did or didn't. (Although I would bet AA was in talks with a few teams regarding Colby)

I kind of had the feeling the Jays would win against him if not for any reason than he's a super 2. Not sure why I had that as a feeling. But hopefully everyone is professional about it and moves on. I see it more of a motivating factor for him to go out, have a good year, cash in in the offseason. I'd imagine if he has (or is having) another great year, especially with Bautista and Edwin hitting with him, they might try and get a multi year deal with him. See what he can do first hand, in his new home. Let him get acclimated. Let him get used to playing with his new team and see how it goes. Then if it's another great season talk buying out arbitration and/or FA years.

 

As for Romero. I know he probably is going to come in hoping to be healthy and prove he's worth another shot in the bigs to someone. If not he'll be waiting for the season to end and hopefully wind up in another organization where he might get a shot to reach the bigs again. I know he's had a few injuries but I feel for him. he fell and fell hard. Just for his sake I hope he can wind up at least having a decent year in AAA or wind up being moved sometime during the year to get a fresh start so he can attempt to get another shot. It won't be here unless he really explodes out of ST, in Buffalo and someone goes down with an injury.

I'm sure out of all the Buffalo starters he'd probably be the last one promoted. Although, if it was one of those Laffey situations though where we only needed a replacement starter for one start I could see him being called up. I can't imagine anyone would claim him after being demoted the next day.

That wouldn't be mine. If I'm making $7.5M a year I damn well better be earning it. There's no price tag on my pride. Romero has to be living with a lot of shame and guilt of being a failure that's being paid to go away, and that must send him into a downward spiral that makes him even worse. The only person who is less deserving of the money he made was Bernie Madoff...seriously Romero is just one step above criminals who intentionally defraud people in terms of not earning his money. That's how far he's fallen.
