KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 I'd rather have a player for the whole year than just from the deadline on, that's where the value is. If there were still good players out there I might agree with you but we're talking a full season of somoene like K-Rod here. I feel like anyone you bring in at this point is just someone you're spending on for the sake of spending. It would be foolish to do that if it kept you from potentially making a major acquisition. There could definitely be players out there who bring in more in a partial season than K-Rod et all in a full one.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Lind trade 2.0? Navarro (oddly enough) have some value on the market. Lucroy out; Texas and DBacks s*** C; VMart hurt (DH-C role) Lucroy is only missing spring training and his backup is better than Navarro anyways. Chirinos in Texas is bettet than Navarro. DBacks have s*** but they overvalue it. Maybe Detroit opens up but they won't trade from an already thin bullpen and they have no farm. They might give you salary relief. That might be worth it.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2015 Author Posted February 12, 2015 Weighted ball duo will save our ass. +5 walk rate, but that doesn't matter. http://gamereax.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/cecildelabarrivera.gif
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 The funny thing is that we all thought AA was being cheap when he said he paid too much to get Navarro. I remember I was all like, "he's your starting catcher ffs, 8 million / 2 years is nothing" but AA was right. Navarro was expensive because he was only a starting catcher by default. His skill set just isn't good enough to be a starter on an average MLB team and his backloaded deal is proving really hard to get out of.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 If Redmond is the long guy, maybe they give Estrada a look in a late inning role? Then he could still be stretched out when someone gets hurt.

Bluebird Banter addressed this very same scenario and came to the conclusion that it was a bad idea: http://www.bluebirdbanter.com/2015/1/27/7918463/the-case-against-marco-estrada-reliever Then they looked at his potential as a 5th starter and came to the conclusion that he could provide pretty similar production that Happ did in the same role: http://www.bluebirdbanter.com/2015/2/6/7990053/the-case-for-marco-estrada-starter It's good stuff. They put way more research into it than any of us are likely to do.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Estrada should be the fifth starter. Norris in AAA until a need arises. Simple.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Estrada should be the fifth starter. Norris in AAA until a need arises. Simple. If he is ready today why should he be in AAA What will he learn in 2 months in Buffalo that will make him a better pitcher

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Presented without comment. Why?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Estrada should be the fifth starter. Norris in AAA until a need arises. Simple. What if Norris is ready, is the better pitcher, and Estrada could be helpful in the pen?
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 What do you think Ricky Ro is up to right now? Crying in the fetal posistion somewhere! Lol
BTS Community Moderator Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Do you want to send him to another team for nothing? 5M backup catcher is gross, but trade him to nothing is worse. Of course. We'd never sign Navarro for 1/5 on the open market, so why would you avoid moving him for nothing if that's all that's available?
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 If both Norris and Shanchez start in Buffalo as depth! One would have to think either something went terribly wrong or we had a better offseason finding arms for the pen then we thought! And one of Estrada Romero or Drabek really came on strong! Stealing the Fifth starter spot in spring!
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 What if Norris is ready, is the better pitcher, and Estrada could be helpful in the pen? Then Norris becomes the fifth starter, but you don't assume that going in. Estrada should be the guy until someone beats him for it, and plus it's not like Norris will get hurt by another month in AAA. Although, if Norris makes the rotation, Sanchez is closer/setup man, and Estrada's in the pen, then who is the sixth starter? Hendriks? That's not good.

I would use Estrada as long/swing man in the scenario, he could take over on short notice if need be. That's the problem with Sanchez as a 1 inning closer (a role I'm still not sure I even ideally want him in) - he can't suddenly make starts
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Estrada won't be stretched out enough to make emergency starts in a swing man role. At least with Estrada starting and Norris in AAA, both would be stretched out in case of need.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 K-Rod is garbage. (14 HRs given up! And I thought Cordero was bad. Oh, and despite a sub-1.00 WHIP, he is much worse than his peripherals showed, with a 4.50 FIP, with major regression coming.) Soriano must be asking for too much money if nobody has signed him by now.. he's still out there well into mid-February. As for Chamberlain, he sucks due to his frequent control problems..
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 If he is in the plans for an eventual backup, it would be good to get him up and working with Russ. Now if AJ Jimenez could stay healthy..
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Can't wait till farm boy Jenkins is being run out there in tied games in the bottom of the eight BC he is a big strong guy
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Actually glory is afraid that Norris will fail as a starter and thus wants to avoid having to face that possibility by keeping him in the minors
Ehjays Verified Member Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 If he is ready today why should he be in AAA What will he learn in 2 months in Buffalo that will make him a better pitcher Why......because 2 months of Buffalo delays his service clock. And gives us 1 full bonus year
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 You're stretching the reliever converting to starter angle a little thin. How many multiple inning stints is Estrada going to have as a long man? He'll throw 2 maybe 3 innings in a blow out but likely without any regularity. Expecting him to fill in when an injury occurs is going to take a few starts to build up his pitch count. The way the Jays handled Stroman last year is how they should handle Norris.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 Why......because 2 months of Buffalo delays his service clock. And gives us 1 full bonus year Good cheap controllable SP's are the best thing ever
