People keep pointing out Dave Stewart saying stupid things, but we really need to recognize that LaRussa is pretty much just as laughable.

D'Backs GM says Navarro salary not a fit

Diamondbacks GM Dave Stewart said Monday that Blue Jays catcher Dioner Navarro is not a possible trade candidate because his "salary doesn't fit."

Advice: Navarro is only owed $5 million in 2015 and can then become a free agent, so the Diamondbacks must be under a real budget crunch. Tuffy Gosewisch appears set to open the 2015 season as Arizona's backstop. Navarro has requested a trade from the Blue Jays, who will start Russell Martin behind the plate, but the 31-year-old might not get his wish before Opening Day

Steven Souza, who missed the last week or so with forearm problems due to diving on a ball, was HBP on his arm in his first game back today. Not sure if it was the same arm but he was removed from the game.

Navarro for Inciarte, we pay salary difference? He'd be a great 4th outfielder / bench weapon. Basically a lefty version of Rajai Davis with great defense.

Intriguing thought. Possibly would mean Pillar kept back for AAA depth if and when Saunders is healthy which isn't a bad thing per say but I can't really see the Jays doing that.

Is the defense that much better than Carrera though? They seem to be similar players, lefties who don't walk and play above average D in CF.

I think so, both offensively and defensively. In a lot of ways I'd kind of prefer just keeping Navarro for the year, but if we do something stupid like keep Thole around anyway, then we might as well get a piece that can actually help us rather than clog up the bench with catchers.

That's fair, I just wasn't sure. I agree with the notion that having player X/Thole is a much more desirable than having Navarro/Thole, under the assumption that Player X is actually of value. A 4th OF type who plays CF better than Pillar/Saunders would certainly be valuable for this team. Building depth is great!

Plus Inciarte put up 2.8 WAR last year in about 3/4 of a season, but he didn't hit for power etc and can actually run down balls, so the D-Backs are probably ready to cut him :)

But does he play hard?

Edit: I'm dumn.

I kind of feel like D-Backs fans would be laughing at us if they saw us discussing Navarro for Inciarte. 1 year of a $5M replacement-level catcher for 5 years of a 1-3 win OF who is a plus defender at all 3 positions and only makes 500K this year. I don't think they're in the same hemisphere value-wise.

Agreed, it would have to be a reliever that makes 3 Mil +

So, back to square 1 - Brad Ziegler.

Other than him, it would probably have to be some RP that the Diamondbacks simply do not believe in.

Pretty much, I read a day or 2 ago SD need a catcher, if the Birds take back salary, they could be a match?!

If Webster doesn't make the rotation, he would be wonderful. But yeah, Ziegler's our best bet I guess

Ziegler for Navarro makes is so obvious that you have to think it was one of the first scenarios discussed when the teams chatted. With Arizona's black hole at C and glut of relievers, I'm assuming Toronto isn't interested in Ziegler.

Getting ejected in a Spring Training game is as Diamondbacksy as it gets. They'll probably keep him in the desert for life now.

Delgado may not make the rotation and would be great too. He'd definitely make the team though (would work in long relief).

f***, there goes that idea.

If Delgado doesn't make the rote, definitely a good target

Stewart will Prob get a lot of flack if they're losing & the catching situation is a black hole

Interesting to see how this plays out
