I don't understand how this is good for the cubs. They are not going to make the playoffs this year. I hope other teams break the bank and commit ridiculous dollars to scherzer and shields as well.

Next year Price, Fister, Latos, Cueto, Zimmerman, Iwakuma, Samardzija, Lackey, Porcello, Kasmir, Gallardo are all free agents. I'd much rather be players in next year's starting pitching free agent market and the Jays will have a lot of payroll cleared up for next year as well.

Some will be extended. But, Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox, Tigers, WSH, and several others will all be looking to sign guys too. I don't think there will be any deals.

Miscalculation by the Red Sox thinking they would simply trade Lester for some valuable assets then simply resign him as a free agent.... oops. LOL

Not really. It doesn't really change anything... he still would have been a free agent with any team being a candidate.

They made him an extension offer that he found offensive. They could have given him a reasonable offer and he would have taken it, then the team wouldn't have traded him and got the nice return for him. I hope you understand what I am saying now., it does make a difference.

A contract extension is really just another contract. A player can either except it or not except it. The Red Sox absolutely made the right move by not extending Lester and acquiring some talent instead.

Lester is younger than Shields and should still be good as their players develop. They probably won't have to worry about payroll for quite a while. By then, they can always flip Lester

Yeah...by then, no one's gonna want Lester and his contract, if the Cubs flip him , probably cause they'll have to eat most of his salary

Heyman is one of the most annoying on Twitter. Half the time he tweets garbage speculation and the other half he just tweets garbage like this. Maybe he meant winter meetings? White Sox are still a bad team...

He is garbage. I think Morosi is even worse though.

Agreed.

Morosi is just plain insufferable. Heyman is a dimwit but sometimes he can be funny, and sometimes he actually breaks stuff.

I think the Cubs would probably concede that they'll regret this.

I don't think they would necessarily concede that although you may be right in that they realize the last year of the deal may be lost.

But this is Epstein's MO IMO. He doled out or traded for a lot of very big contracts, especially toward the end of his run Boston.

Morosi is an idiot but he is not nearly as annoying. He doesn't tweet out his opinions as facts like Heyman. Morosi also seems like a much better person listening to interviews etc...

Did the Marlins eat a lot of Buerhle's contract and is he a #1 starter? Lester is 30 years old, and is a #1 starter. I think it's safe to say those now cost upwards of 20m+. He's signed through 36 with a vesting option. It's not that crazy considering the trend in salaries. I think the cubs now they have some team control over very high upside players and they are looking to switch from rebuild to compete right away. They have a pretty solid team now.

There are hardly ever deals on decent to good starting pitchers via free agency.

Jon Lester is a workhorse #2. If he keeps pitching like he did in 2014, he'll establish true acehood.

If he keeps doing this yes, but considering he hasn't had a season this good since 2009, and his DIPS has never been this good. #2 designation would be appropriate.

Although a pitcher at the age of 31 and has never had a FIP under 3, I'm gonna remain skeptical.

Morosi is a hack. I think he's around 0 for 1500 in terms of his Blue Jays rumours and predictions coming to fruition.

He's a human click-bait machine.
