Blue Jays seeking replacement for Beeston

If Angelos didn't have the CEO spot reserved for himself he could have just promoted Duquette and been done with it.

 

It's not just him, his sons are higher on the totem pole than Duquette as well. If I'm not mistaken, John Angelos is the executive VP of the Orioles, and over the past three or so years, Louis Angelos' role with the organization has also begun to expand. Further than that, it's the worst kept secret in baseball that Showalter already has tremendous pull within the organization and it's almost unanimously accepted that he's going to eventually get the promotion to General Manager.

 

There's a reason LaCava said no to the Orioles, and there's a reason why they had to bring in Duquette from the scrap pile when nobody else had a job for him; nobody wants to work for Angelos, and now that Duquette has reestablished his name and he's getting offered a far more lucrative position in an organization where he'll have a lot more freedom, why the hell would anyone in their right mind not want to pursue that opportunity?

 

Everybody hates Peter Angelos, and I fully understand if Duquette wants out of the bengay-scented Angelos and Buck sandwich.

I have a problem with the Blue Jays pursuing Dan Duquette to the extent that they are. I'm even worried about what they'll end up giving up.

 

Angelos is playing hardball to get a better return and what worries me is that the dummies at Rogers may have developed tunnel vision over DD and may get taken to the cleaners.

 

 

I really don't think DD is worth all this trouble.

I don't know if DD is even worth it to begin with. He's the guy that signed Ubaldo Jimenez. I get the sentiment that anything is better than Beeston, but is it really? If Duquette is a meddlesome president that sticks his foot into the baseball ops and it makes the team worse off in the long run, I'm not sure that's a better alternative than Beeston. Yeah Beeston is generally a s*** guy to have on the job, but I don't know if he really kicks the needle one way or another. There's a realistic scenario in which that (mediocrity) is better than having two "GM's" butt heads over different philosophies.

 

And say that doesn't happen, but the Jays miss the playoffs. They fire AA and put Duquette in full charge of the team. What if we find out that he's not a good GM? Do the Jays feel obligated to stick with him longer than they should because of this shitstorm of a situation and the story of his acquisition being made into such a big deal in the media? Will they be afraid to fire him?

If it's anything more than a D level prospect then forget about it. O's had 3 good seasons under him but why would he do a good job at a job that is mostly about business and not baseball?

I'm sure there are plenty of options that are not called Beeston.

I agree to a large extent. Another thing that I don't like about this whole thing is the rumoured reasoning for wanting to replace Beeston and the roumoured reasoning for targetting Duquette ("cause he has experience working in Canada", etc.)

 

 

I could see the Jays giving up a decent package to make sure they don't fail in getting their man....just to f*** up a good offseason.

Very scary. I'm always leery of Jays ownership. I suspect they'll either f*** up the compensation and get Duquette or hire someone else that's worse than Beeston.

I really don't understand what the Orioles are whining about. Corporations poach officers from other corporations in every line of business. Just take the financial compensation and move on.
