Blue Jays seeking replacement for Beeston

A Sports Franchise President/CEO (Not President of Baseball Operations) - is ultimately in charge of the on field and off field success of the team. For the baseball side, usually the CEO/President will hire a VP of Baseball Operations, GM, and have them handle the baseball side, obviously in close communication. Beeston most likely focuses his day-to-day in the realm of finance, marketing, promotion, community outreach, etc. In this case, Beeston also acts as a liason between the Blue Jays and its corporate ownership in Rogers. Beeston was also CEO of Rogers Centre, so the management of the facility is also part of his day to day duties. In other franchises, negotiating and manageing the media deals and relationships are a huge part of the role, but with the left pocket/right pocket Rogers relationship, theres not much to do with that. To use a hockey comparison, think Richard Peddie = Beeston.

 

Theres been some confusion with Job titles recently since there has been 'title inflation' with guys like Friedman and Epstein. In the old days, they'd be the VP of Baseball Operations, GM, and they'd have a Assistant GM. Now, those guys are "President of Baseball Operations" with final say on baseball matters, and guys like Hoyer and Zaidi have GM titles, whereas they're truly functioning in the historical Assistant GM Role. To use another hockey comparison, think Burke = Epstein and Nonis = Hoyer.

Yes, this is true. Except for last season really, Nonis has never really been the true GM. He was assistant GM under Burke. Got the GM title when Burke was fired, then they brought in Shanahan above him as President, Hockey Operations, which essentially was a demotion, although with the "title inflation" he is still GM in name.

I don't see any scenario where AA doesn't finish the year as GM at this point in the offseason regardless of what happens with the CEO spot.

Lot more to running a MLB club then the team on the field. Hopefully someone that focusses on the marketing, stadium issues, PR, HR, travel arrangements, medical staff, etc. And leaves the team to the GM and Manager.

I wasn't suggesting right away, but within a year or two AA will likely be gone with a new President.

Apparently they are on the search for a new GM because they were displeased regarding his search for a Bud Selig replacement. If I recall Beeston was part of a small minority not to vote for a certain person.

IMO I think this is a good sign that the Rogers executives are actually following the baseball industry and keeping tabs. THe fact that they are concerned about reputation is good.

 

edit: based on my short research, it appears Beeston didn't want Manfred to win (and instead Lerner) so that he could get a job @ MLB with Werner-Brosnan leading the way

AA's off-season thus far has been good enough to where I want to give him a chance, but Duquette would be an amazing hire. He's built playoff teams everywhere he's gone, and while he wouldn't be the GM in the president role, he'd set the tone for how the organization would be run. Hope it happens.

Good news Beeston is going to be gone as I simply can't think of anything he has done over the last 5 years that is positive for the Blue Jays. Hopefully the new guy can help bring grass to RC.

 

I really hope Ken Williams is not his replacement though. Terrible GM and apparently he tries to mingle with their current GM's decisions. Honestly AA probably could be a decent President as he seems pretty business oriented but thats just pure speculating. Usually new Presidents will want their own guy as GM which isn't good news for AA.
