So just to be clear, what's being advocated in this thread is that we don't need an ace to either get to the playoffs or enable us to advance when we get there. Further Madison Bumgarner is now statistically equal to Marcus Stroman and that Hutchinson may or may not have little/some/lots of upside.

Holy f***ing s***.

that's all pretty much correct, minus the picture

Offence can carry you only so far. I don't think it's only goofy fans like us saying it - a legit #1 starter is what outside observers see as one of the Jays needs. I wouldn't put that at the top of the list as a hole to fill (that's what she said) but I wouldn't disregard it like it's some crazy notion either.

Hutch's current repertoire roughly equates a #3 starter. But he is still young and seems the type that can learn/add other pitches to keep hitters off balance so who knows where his career will go....

No one will deny a Lester/Shields/McCarthy increases the Jays WS chances, recent history with Detroit's big 3, Kershaw, and Shields notwithstanding.

The only question is $$ and priorities. Should be OF, RP, SP, 2B IMO.

I prefer Pillar in Buffalo as depth. The OF come April should be Bautista, Pompey, Dirks, and Markakis, Saunders, Aoki, or ?.

Need one or two good relievers.

More than enough depth at 2B. Not much available on the market..... Cabrera and Lowrie are pretty much the only FA worth pursuing but they will be an overpay due to the aforementioned market shortage. Probably best to roll with in-house options.

Leaves SP which purely depends on $$ and whether AA can pull off a sign/trade - eg. move Dickey and sign sign Shields or someone. The budget creativity he talks about.

I'm entirely confused with your post..why are you attaching free agents with teams...lol. Boston's rotation as it stands is Buchholz, Kelly, Webster, De La Rosa, Workman. Adding Lester doesn't make it a great rotation. Scherzer to NYY would make a nice rotation, but the injury worries for both Tanaka and Pineda are high. Adding a number 3 pitcher to a team with a bunch of number 3s doesn't really change anything. Laffey? Tampa probably has the best rotation in the division, but is lacking on offense.

It was a response to your Post #76, which basically says the other ALE teams have crappy rotation so not to worry about ours. Dangerous logic, NY, Bos, Bal are all likely to make significant improvements to their rotation before March.

i don't see that as likely at all, given the weak pitching market and a reluctance to take on salary. boston will get some help but they are so bad right now it will take more than a couple of arms.

What? Weak pitching market? Reluctance to take on salary? New York/Boston?
