HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Author Posted December 1, 2014 Is this guy reliable? Oops I derped. When I checked his account I thought he said he writes for @MLB but that's not the case. HOWEVER, the same time this came out this article came out: http://m.mlb.com/news/article/102779328/the-orioles-and-dodgers-have-reportedly-talked-about-a-trade-involving-matt-kemp mod delete if needed
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Good. Gives AA another possible option in Markakis if Melky doesn't re-sign.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Starting now we need to not have any threads for things that are "close" or might happen unless its reported by a legit source. If its not a Rosenthol, Heyman or legit beat writer of the team then its probably not going to happen. These no name baseball reporters have made so many false claims.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Dirks > Markakis Dirks/Pillar platoon >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Markakis (and Melky, for that matter).
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Dirks > Markakis Dirks/Pillar platoon >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Markakis (and Melky, for that matter). Really have no idea how healthy Dirks is... He could be a Nolan Reimold for all we know.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Not sure why all you guys hate melky so much because you shouldn't. If he can be resigned for reasonable price hes a good guy for this team.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Dirks > Markakis Dirks/Pillar platoon >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Markakis (and Melky, for that matter). Agreed.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Markakis please, he'd be perfect for this lineup and he's been a f***ing tank since he got into the league.

If he can be resigned for reasonable price hes a good guy for this team. For me, it's mostly a durability issue, coupled with the fact that he's already a below average fielder at arguably the easiest position in baseball. I don't really relish a 1 tool player (average) under contract when he's likely going to be forced to the DH role in the next year or two. 3/39 is as high as I go for Melky.

It's not hard to play. There are much fewer opportunities for a player to make a difference in a game. You can literally go several games where all plays to left will be routine. It's not like Melky plays catcher or short stop. There's a reason Hanley is playing left field.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 The Orioles probably just want leverage in dealing with Nick Markakis. I don't think it's happening.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 God if we get Markakis, Jamie Campbell will keep saying 'You can't have you Markakis and eat it too".
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Matt Kemp would hit 40 in OPACY. I'm watching MLBN and Harold Reynolds and the other analysts on MLB Hot Stove can't figure out why the Dodgers are shopping Kemp, they think it's stupid. Matt Kemp is great but they have five quality outfielders lol.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Author Posted December 1, 2014 its crazy how far he's fallen off. He came so close to being 40/40 a few years ago and I remember he said he plans to become the first 50/50 player. He wasn't too bad last year, but dat contract.
LGBJ29 Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Markakis should be the first option. f*** Melky. Markakis would be perfect for this lineup. Would be outstanding in LF. I love how people who shoot down Melky's D say they would love Markakis instead. The guy's fielding is just as bad as Melky and arguably worse, and providing less pop offensively. Im not on the Melky train either, but don't give me Markakis as a replacement and think we've upgraded immensely
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Author Posted December 1, 2014 How do you guys feel about taking all of Matt Kemp's salary and putting him in LF? Or would you take him and put him as DH? Or would you rather have Melky, or use DH as a rotational position like how the Yankees used it in 2013?

I'd rather have Melky for a few years less at a few dollars less.

If you have to take on that entire salary you are handcuffed for the future and if LA eats a big portion, it will cost more than he is going to be worth in prospects.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Author Posted December 1, 2014 What is Melky expected to sign for anyway? Kemp has 5 years left at $109, or a bit over $20m a year. His defense is atrocious, sure, but the other option (Melky) is average at best and his bat is nowhere near Kemp's. And LF isn't entirely a position that requires a whole lot of defense to begin with, and we can just have Pompey shade a bit to LF when righties come up.

So many better ways to efficiently add a 1.5 to 2.5 fWAR player. Aoki or trade for Saunders are my preferred options for LF.

z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 I'm fine with a Dirks/Pillar platoon as long as we address/upgrade other needs. I just think its lazy quoting Steamers like its gospel. If you are using it to say that player A is worth .2WAR more than player B next year, I don't think you are using it right. I also think its lazy using MLBTR's expected contract when it seems that is unlikely at this point.

You could use the same reasoning to say we wouldn't want Gregory Polanco over any of those three.
