glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 They are paying Izturis $4M next season. Unless they get a clear upgrade, just go with Izturis/Goins until Travis is ready.
ScientificReason Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Jesus hope they have someone better then this in mind.
gbill2004 Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Author Posted December 1, 2014 Maybe he's just being used as leverage in contract talks with a better free agent 2B.
Key22 Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 He's worth a shot on a rebound but the contract should be incentive laden. It's not a bad idea to sign these guys as back-up options. Boston picked up Francisco from waivers as a fall back if they did not land the Panda - once they got the Panda they dropped Francisco. I don't see why the Jays should not do the same. Justin Smoak is kind of our fall-back if they can't land a DH or 1B bat. And guys we're not even at the Winter meetings - would not be surprised to see AA pull off one of those 10 player trades again. Maybe target a LF/CF, 2B, SP, in one big move. It is AA after all. He likes to purge the farm every now and again.
LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Callaspo sounds like he'd be great depth, good guy to have in AAA if that's even feasible, incase he regains his form.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Look I don't love the idea of signing Callaspo but we're not the ones working phones and gauging the market. Callaspo was a 3 WAR player in his prime. If the market is really bad AND if AA has a credible reason to believe he can bounce back, the signing could work out just fine as a bridge to Travis. An added bonus is that he's a switch hitter which would help balance things out against RHP. Yeah I'd rather Jed Lowrie or something but we don't know who will or won't come to Toronto. Callaspo shouldn't be anyone's favourite target but he's not necessarily puke worthy either. My biggest issue with him is that he's a 2B only. I guy who could slide to SS would be ideal. Otherwise, Goins is the only backup SS.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Stop homering on s***** Jays players. Callaspo is better than all of them. Strong words from someone who was a reed Johnson fan! Lol
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 the only way this makes sense is Izturis recovery not going well
JaysRap Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Could be nothing, but I went onto Fangraphs to check on Callapso's Steamer projection (a 1.0 WAR, .252/.326/.354) and for some reason Ricky Romero's one of the top listed players search. It also has (starting from top down) Josh Donaldson, Allberto Callapso, Brett Lawrie, Torii Hunter, Ricky Romero, Max Schrezer, Brian Duensing, Yoenis Cespedes, Jeff Samardzija, and Clayton Kershaw. All those guys are normally newsworthy - whether it's a recent trade or free agent. I dunno, very strange.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 As I said earlier, Jays have made their 2B move (Travis) and they're just looking for stop gaps until Travis forces his way up. It'll likely be a platoon type of situation, but I don't expect the Jays to invest much on 2B.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 I think this board is overstimulated. There's nothing wrong checking out Collapso as a depth move. But it's certainly not worthy of 40+ posts in less than two hours, much of them negative. This is a rumour barely worth noting, until AA comes out with a smile on his face saying the deal is done and 2B is solved for the season.

Let's also not forget that there was a thread about the Jays getting John Jaso and it turned out that it was Josh Donaldson. We'll see what happens.

Simple answer. 1) Casual jays fan looks up brett lawrie/donaldson stats 2) Casual fan remember ricky romero 3) Searches and wonders what happened To this day no one has given me an explanation of what happend to Romero.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 How is Callaspo better than Sean Rodriguez who plays 7 positions.
xposbrad Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 How is Callaspo better than Sean Rodriguez who plays 7 positions. The way I look at it, they have a promising rookie, and several guys who can play D for 2b. There are better options than Callaspo available, but it's not like there are a bunch of game changers. Just plug in 2B with good D and average hitting, and focus on SP and LF. Wasn't Panik a rookie for the giants this year? There are better hitting options for the outfield and better pitching options right now. Some people on this board are focused on having like big war players at every position, it's not realistic, and not necessary.
Brenner Verified Member Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 How is Callaspo better than Sean Rodriguez who plays 7 positions. He is below average at 1 position, instead of poor but doable at 7 positions.
