L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 Combined those guys are projecting to be twice as valuable as Dickey, Burly, and Reyes Do you think they make the Jays a real contender, though? Keep in mind Martin probably isn't pursued if TDA is behind the dish.

We could have easily gone out and signed cheaper and better options than taking on so much salary. Also would be more options available via trade had we had money to take on some salary. Those trades were essentially free agent signings to really bad contracts because we gave up very little. Now we're stuck with these guys because they have essentially 0 trade value. This board was going crazy to trade Janssen last off season after he had a career year. I felt the same with Rasmus. Now we have no return for either. These are just a few examples of not selling high.

There are so many variables to take into account over the past two years it's almost impossible to say what would've happened. Now if you were referencing trading TDA and Syndergaard for Latos, then I would agree.

Selective memory only goes so far to make a point. Some breakout players stay good, some go back to being bad. The jays have both lost out and benefited from these cases, just like any and every other team.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 I'd go with Lester. I trust him more over a long term deal. I agree, I'd rather take a chance with a horse like Lester.

So basically, McCown is throwing away any credibility we thought he had, and making everything in this article less and less likely to be true.

He didn't exactly say that. Said he wouldn't be surprised if they went over 5 years. AA came on the damn show yesterday and said they aren't in discussions with any free agents right now. Believe he also said they wouldn't break the 5 year policy for a pitcher as well.
Errorcebia Verified Member Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 We've been hearing this for years but nothing has really ever changed. Payroll is apparently never an issue but then the team refuses to pay up for proven players to fix positions that are a serious weakness for the team. It's also disingenuous to say that money isn't an issue but the term of a contract is an issue. The two are not mutually exclusive. The dollar value is dependent on the term and the term is informed by the dollar amount. This is just Rogers ******** that we have been hearing for ten years now. If Russell Martin wasn't Canadian he wouldn't have been the top priority this offseason. He will be the face of the team for the next five years until some other maple bat hopefully comes along for them.

Meh, I would've understood (not liked it since I've always loved EE and Bau since his September breakout but totally understood) had the Jays traded Bautista and Edwin. Selling high. Francisco too. Sometimes you guess right, sometimes you guess wrong. Thankfully the Jays guessed right on those two. Wasn't Bautista for Jurrjens/Sanchez a thing on the board a while back?
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 I'd go with Lester. I trust him more over a long term deal. I'd go with Shields cheaper and probably less years required too!
