kgm1 Verified Member Posted November 15, 2014 Author Posted November 15, 2014 Still surprised that Kevin Towers still has a job, the last decent move I can remember is when he traded for Aaron Hill. Dave Stewart is the new GM in AZ. With LaRussa pulling his strings
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 Yep. All the love they get on this board yet they haven't drafted well and their system is pretty bare I know, right? People should totally ignore that they have been the best team in the East for 7 years while having the lowest budget in the division because they don't have a great farm and that's all that matters.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted November 15, 2014 Author Posted November 15, 2014 I really don't think the Rays will miss a beat. Friedman is a smart guy, but he was hired by smart guys, and then hired a bunch of other smart guys who are still there. If they can buy their way out of that lease and Montreal builds a stadium I really think they would move . that city just doesn't deserve a team

I hope they move. I've always wanted to see that group operate with more flexibility. I guess I'll see it in LA, but I've developed a soft spot for the Rays so it won't be the same.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 lol...Spiced Rum's kicking in, soon you'll be talking to the Captain, lol. Lol.

Not saying they don't do some things right. This is exactly the type of moves they make that are usually right. Just saying their farm is s***
Chappy Community Moderator Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 I don't even care. Nor should you.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted November 15, 2014 Author Posted November 15, 2014 Still the same staff, regardless. That i would enjoy watching build a team with some money
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 Rays will be fine as they're still owned/managed by Sternberg. Just like the D-Backs continue to make moves like this one, even if they've fired Towers. Maybe Happ can fetch a similar package for the Jays plus free up $$$. On the other hand, AA doesn't operate as the Rays do.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 (edited) Hellickson for two decent prospects? The rays are being managed by aliens. Great trade. Hellickson = Nolin Edited November 15, 2014 by Angrioter
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 Friedman may be overrated..... he had plenty of good help it appears
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 Rotation: Cobb Moore Archer Odorizzi Smyly Depth: Karns, Colome, Romero, Montgomery Who really needed Hellickson? Rays have plenty of good young arms already.

Rays have plenty of good young arms already. Nice depth.. but they need offense in the worst way (worst in the AL. Astros and Yankees were 2nd and 3rd worst.) So more trades are likely.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 Too bad jays had pounded him last couple of years.

Their lineup was awful last season - Longoria didn't produce as he should, Zobrist was injured for parts of the season, Jennings and Myers were huge disappointments offensively. They have a lot of holes in that lineup.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 Zobrist is an amazing asset, Put him anywhere and get that production.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 That organization was a pile of poo before 2 of the rats left the sinking ship. Yaaay Moogy is back
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 I would love it if two of our injured and disappointing players combined for 9 WAR. The Rays have a good core of talent and will be fine. Longoria and Zobrist are a great core of talent - not sold on Jennings (looks like he will never live up to the hype he was given a couple of years ago) and Myers looks like he can be a disappointment as well. As for the rest of their squad - they have no catcher, no shortstop, a slap hitting first baseman, Franklin at 2B possibly, weak corner OF's - they are not in that great shape as many think they are. The pitching is fantastic yes, though for them to sniff the postseason next year, they'll need Myers and Jennings to really step it up.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 they would've been fine but for their starting staff being depleted early on in the season which set them back the entire year I don't think starting pitching was an issue with them last season - they had Price for the entire first half and more, Cobb made 27 starts, Archer 32 starts, Odorizzi 31 starts. Sure they didn't have Matt Moore for the entire season, though their pitching was solid enough without him still and its not like Moore would have been one of their top starters anyways.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted November 16, 2014 Author Posted November 16, 2014 Dave Stewart disagrees with our assessment of Helickson. Dave Stewart of the Diamondbacks sees Jeremy Hellickson as “a number two or number three starter,” Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic writes. The prospects the Diamondbacks sent to the Rays, Justin Williams and Andrew Velazquez, both have potential. (Williams hit .351/.403/.437 in 320 plate appearances in rookie ball and at Class A South Bend this season, impressive numbers for an 18-year-old at any level.) But for Stewart, Hellickson’s talent was more important, and he can help the Diamondbacks now. “They could both be All-Stars, but from our standpoint they’re three or four years away from being major league players,” says Stewart. “We have an opportunity to get a good starter to put in our rotation now and go along with our plans for our team with the 2015 season.”

Lol @ the Diamondbacks.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 Just another example that it all starts at the very top. When a franchise fails with multiple GM's running the team, you've gotta look at ownership.

jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 A flyball pitcher who doesn't miss bats will be a number 2 in Chase field. Okay
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 A flyball pitcher who doesn't miss bats will be a number 2 in Chase field. Okay isn't that exactly what Josh Collmenter is? He put up a 2.63 ERA (3.82 FIP, 3.95 xFIP) at home last year. Guaranteed the D-Backs will slowly get Hellickson away from throwing his 2 seam fastball at all and he'll be throwing a cutter. Sadly he probably is a number 2 for that team.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 Hellickson must remind Dave Stewart of a young Joey Hamilton.
LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted November 16, 2014 Posted November 16, 2014 Hellickson had one fluke year where he totally out-performed his peripherals...
