Rusty_Savage Verified Member Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 Lol I remember that If the Jays win the World series this year it was November 2014 when AA sealed it What if Liriano pitches a gem in game 7?
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 Thank god AA made this trade. There is going to be a lot of roster turnover next year and we need all the stability we can get.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 Talk about winning a game of trade hot potato, Taylor becomes Wallace becomes Gose becomes Travis.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 Yeah. People are acting like Travis is a solid bet to come in and be a league-average starter. That's probably not going to happen yet. Tisk Tisk
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 Got to love this kid. He has a crap game and then comes back with 2 beauties. Seems to have a great mental make up fighting back from injury and early struggles after a short live game rehab. 2015 was no mirage.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 Pillar was a nobody until last year. Gose was a legit prospect with a lot of potential. THey would have sent five Pillars over. It's just another case of Minor League defensive reports being wrong wrong wrong. I was probably the highest guy on Pillar on this board saying that he could be a 100% platoon guy and play all 3 OF positions as the 4th OF adequately. He's now an 81 wRC+ vs RHP for his career and just 91 vs. LHP, if he's not one of the top 3 (2? 1?) CF's defensively I would have seriously overrated him.

Three years ago if you said the Jays would have a 3-win homegrown CF with elite defense, great speed, and an 85 wRC+ bat, literally everyone familiar with the team would have assumed it was Gose, and nobody would have been surprised at the outcome. As you say, minor league defensive reports can't be trusted.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 People love to s*** all over the Marlins trade, but rarely do people give AA proper credit for this trade. Travis has 4.3 WAR in only 117 career games, that's incredible. He's a core asset.

Travis has 4.3 WAR in only 117 career games, that's incredible. He's a core asset. AA's trade history was basically boom-or-bust. Top 5 (in no order); 1. Donaldson 2. Wells 3. Travis 4. Escobar 5. Morrow Bottom 5: 1. Dickey 2. Frank Francisco (for Napoli) 3. Rogers (for Gomes and Aviles) 4. Reyes 5. Halladay? Hard to judge more recent trades, such as the Tulo and Price deals, but AA loved making the big trades. When they worked, they worked really well. When they didn't, they were bad or horrendous. Edit: I wonder whether the Rasmus trade is considered a win, too. Sure, 2 of his 3 seasons weren't great, but he was a 5+ fWAR player in one of those seasons. The Jays didn't give up much of significance acquiring him, as well.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 I think the Estrada trade could be up there. Rasmus trade (think we got 7 wins out of Colby). Original Happ trade from HOU. Lawrie for Marcum. Buying a pick with the Olivo trade. Original Happ trade with Houston is a pretty bad one. It was basically a way for them to dump Francisco Cordero.
Frag Verified Member Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 Original Happ trade with Houston is a pretty bad one. It was basically a way for them to dump Francisco Cordero. Especially if Musgrove develops into a decent SP.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 As I've been saying all along, AA left this team is far better shape than when he took it over. Good luck to him. As far as Beeston is concerned, good riddance. I'm glad the Blue Jays stumbled onto Shapiro instead of Kenny Williams.

To some extent, yes, they were dumping Cordero. However, the Blue Jays were rumoured to like Happ for awhile. Jays also got Michael Sanders for J.A. Happ in a trade loved by most here.

I'm not sure I agree that AA loved making the big trade. I think his mandate changed and had to start winning before the team was ready. He did end up sending his retiring boss on a high note which I think was ultimately his mandate.

We basically gave up Zack Stewart, Octavio Dotel, Marc Rzepczynski and Corey Patterson. We got a couple crappy relief pitchers back too. So basically one prospect who flamed out quickly, 2 RP and a scrub for Rasmus.

Gose is like the Anti-Pillar. Everyone thought he had all the skill to be an elite defender in CF and a great source of speed on the basepaths. That seemed like his floor. Meanwhile, Pillar was thought to have the ceiling of a role player. Just goes to show how little or how much a player can do depending on how much of their potential they realize.
