Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 He's 24 before the season starts, and has 400+ successful PA in at AA, so he could be used from opening day. They should probably have a solid contingency plan in place in the not-unlikely event that he struggles though. Travis is just a black Kevin Pillar at 2B, but...............................man try to understand our joy, finally Goins was displaced. Gose is a good asset, but the lack of MIF depth is killing us.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 this sounds really good. will be interesting to see how healthy and ready he is come april 1st. who is the forth outfielder now?? Jose in R, Pompey in CF, Pillar and who for LF?
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I really hope that the OF solution isn't status quo. They have Mayberry/Dirks in LF which you probably pencil in for like 0 WAR, Pillar who might be an OK 4th OF, and Pompey, who could be anywhere from above-average to terrible. If this is the group they plan on rolling with, I don't think they get a whole lot from their OF outside of Bautista. Even signing Melky or an everyday starter their OF depth takes a hit with Pompey in the majors. This is a continued AA M.O.
LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Impossible not to like this trade, Gose never lived up to anything offensively. Glad to see him go. I guess the Tigers are missing Austin Jackson and trying to replace him...
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 People said that all last off-season and nothing actually happend. This isn't a major move. If hes suppose to be our second baseman in 2015 we still have a hole to fill. Not sure why fans are planning the parade. So much work and I hope he opens next year in Triple-A with Pompey. This would be ideal.

Gose is a good asset, but the lack of MIF depth is killing us. can they keep Goins on the bench and have him play the 8th and 9th inning every other day so Reyes doesn't have to be on the field so much?
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Even signing Melky or an everyday starter their OF depth takes a hit with Pompey in the majors. This is a continued AA M.O. Yeah. I'm expecting every capable major league bullet to open the season in the majors (Pompey, Pillar, and now Travis).
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 This would be ideal. why are so many harsh on Pompey. he's a little older and has the baseball smarts to step in and play. if he had not broken his hand 2 years in a row he would probably have already made the team last year.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Won't get excited until i see results but this appears to be a decent trade
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Yeah. I'm expecting every capable major league bullet to open the season in the majors (Pompey, Pillar, and now Travis). add Carlos Quentin or Josh Willingham

It's not that I don't like Pompey. It's that you want guys like that stepping in as depth mid-season. If Pillar and Pompey struggle/get hurt, who steps in? There's nobody else after them.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I agree, he should definitely get some seasoning in AAA first. It's also good that this trade allows us to slowly integrate DSJ to second base instead of rushing him to fill a need.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Author Posted November 13, 2014 Sounds like by AA's comments it is going to be Pompey/Pillar though.

There's nobody else after them. that goes to my point of Pillar and "who" in LF. they need a good 4th OF on the bench just in case and to give them a bat for pinch hitting late in games. this year we need to start with a min of 4 men on the bench and a 5th would be more acceptable. give Gibbons some options so he can actually show if he can manage.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 If the Jays are going cheap at CF and now potentially 2B, they have to have something big lined up, right? I mean, going into the season with Pompey at CF and Travis at 2B is one thing (at least they have upside), but Smoak at 1B and Dirks in LF is terrible. Maybe they give Melky the money he wants now without worrying about filling 2B.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Did they attend the same school? Also, Stroman is the best. god no...Travis was a Seminole (both in the ACC though)
vdartanian Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Any trade that means I don't have to watch Kawasaki or J. Diaz fill in at 2B, i am in favor of. Watching the lack of depth/talent at the position this past season was a f***ing travesty. Gose won't be missed
BallsDeep Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 How much better is Martin than Navarro though? Defensively an improvement? I thought Navarro was solid. Go get a big name pitcher.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Anyone know why Keith Law thinks so little of Travis? His minor league numbers look pretty good but so are a lot a players. And hes 23 at Double-A. If hes anything he should be exceling at that level. Well Keith Law also said on PTS in 2010 that Jose was a one year wonder, and that the Blue Jays should trade him for whatever they could get while they could. lol I would take anything he says with a grain of salt.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 While I like the trade, I warn people here against highly rating this Travis guy. It scares me to think that with a veteran team in its contention window, we will be going with a rookie 2B who at best case scenerio will hit for league average. At the same time, Gose was only slightly better than Dwayne Wise. Nothing is lost, and small probability something good is gained. I wonder how the veterans on this club feel right now. Rookie 2B, doesn't sound like a team trying to win a championship.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 And Ray Ferraro with the best take on the trade so far.

Also said that the Gose for Wallace trade made zero sense for the Jays so he has a track record lol. Dave Cameron seems to like the trade from the Jays perspective http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/blue-jays-and-tigers-make-minor-trade-that-might-matter/

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Travis Steamer projects a .273/.319/.401 line (102 wRC+). The average #MLB 2B? .250/.307/.364 (88 wRC+).
