I know I rag on them, but they're alright.

Inb4 some nerdy numbers telling me how they're lower-middle of the pack.

My dad who barely even knows baseball thinks theyre stupid. I don't think I've met anyone that thinks they are good at their job.

at least they're inadvertently funny, who remembers that one home run that gave buck a stroke? that s*** was hilarious

You might need to be more specific, there are at least 3 of those every month, more recently Pompey's first HR.

lmao, i think it was during the may run, the jays got a late inning XBH and buck started coughing halfway through the call. i'll do some digging later, i was laughing at that s*** for days

It's all about the lulz, these guys have to talk simple to casuals and new fans, but implementing advanced stats should be a given, year to year. You still need to school folks. OPS was never heard of just a handful of years ago. wRC+ or wOBA would help, FIP or even xFIP, it needs to be implemented, some baseball heavy cities already are.

The FO decides those things, and we all know that AA doesn't use or understand any of it.

I like them, I get more than enough detailed info from this board. Having someone like Scully would be great no doubt but I like Pat and Buck's laid back approach to the game.

There's laid back and then there's comatose. If I listen closely enough (and I rarely do) they make at least 5 mistakes a night either with the score, players names, the pitch count, what happened in previous innings and so on. They're just not professional enough for my tastes quite honestly.

I miss so desperately the halcyon era of Howarth and Cheek. They were simply the gold standard for baseball commentating in this market, although of course Jerry is still excellent.

They're incompetent, that's my problem with them. They make assertions without having done the research to back them up. There are other issues I have with them, like covering up the team's short-comings by constantly praising the opposition when the Jays are losing and glorifying the Jays when they're doing well, but I guess that comes with the owner of the franchise also owning the broadcasting network.

Jerry is a play by play guy. Like him or not, he meets the basic requirements of that job which is to describe the action correctly. Buck isn't a play by play guy. He's a colour guy. The Jays broadcast is basically two colour guys blathering on, one of which does s***** play by play on the side. That's why it just doesn't work. A lot of people liked Buck in the Jim Hughson days when he only did colour but his play by play must be objectively the worst in the majors. He's just not accurate whatsoever. Can any of his defenders name anyone who bungles more calls? He's simply not competent. I don't know how this is even up for debate.

My one irk with Jerry is when he gets angry. He starts going on & on about whatever it is that's pissing him off. I'm thinking okay Mr. Rogers you can cool the holier than thou tough guy rant.

Confession: I enjoyed Rod Black.

The thing with even a low end broadcaster like Rod Black if that he's still a professional broadcaster. There are a few ex jocks who are just naturally good at broadcasting. Alan Ashby was uncannily good at it for someone in his second profession but unless you have an Ashby type in the booth it's really best to have at least one person who is a trained broadcaster. At the very least they are trained to enunciate properly and know the basic ins and outs of the jobs. Buck is just not qualified. He's a colour guy and he could easily get a job doing colour any number of places. The whole reason he came back to the Jays was that they were the only ones willing to offer him a play by play gig and in hindsight, it's pretty obvious why no one else would.

Jerry seems to be getting old and cantankerous and you would think he's nearing the end of his run. He's been a very harsh Bautista critic and a fierce Cito loyalist and he annoys me on both those counts. But even if I don't share his opinions, I appreciate that he's an old pro and he does have a real skill for play by play when he sticks to it.

Yeah, that's just it. I started listening to Rod Black when I was in mid mid-teens and I couldn't tell that he didn't have a whole lot of baseball knowledge. He sounded professional and was fun to listen to. Compared to guys like Faulds and Campbell he was just in another tier at the time.

I have mixed feelings about Campbell. I like his enthusiasm and I like that he doesn't act like he knows more about baseball than he does but ultimately his voice is pretty grating for someone in his job. That's a bigger problem for me than the whole rooting for other teams thing which I thought was really overblown. I have to say that I also appreciate the way he took his demotion. He seems to bring the same enthusiam for the anchor job than he did for play by play and overall, he just seems like a good guy which makes him less annoying than he might be otherwise. Rob Faulds, on the other hand, seems really bitter about losing the play by play gig. Whenever he filled in for Bobcat on PTS, he avoided talking about baseball completely which makes him look petty.

I actually like Campbell in his current role. He's enthusiastic and seems to like what he does. He never should have been asked to do play-by-play.

Jamie brings in the grandma demographic. Lots of shoutouts to Hazel from Burnaby who is celebrating her 95th birthday, etc.

He's good in his current role but he was awful as a play-by-play guy.

Yeah his voice is fine in small doses and he has charisma which counts for something. It's also good to have someone who doesn't take himself seriously to offset the "manalyst".

I was pretty annoyed that Buck's incompetence distracted from that moment.

Seeing as the media always likes to put contrarian opinions into the mix, why not have a saber-friendly guy paired with a guy like Buck?

That way the audience gets a bigger picture look at what's actually happening in baseball?
