Since I couldn't find a "Brett Cecil is a Stud thread", I thought it'd be fun if we had a Studs & Duds list updated weekly.

 

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Duds - Rasmus, Morrow, Janssen, Santos, Goins (but we knew he'd be so he didn't necessarily disappoint the way the other 4 did)

 

Studs - Bautista, Stroman, Cecil, Melky

To me the most pleasant surprise was Melky. So steady all year, really never had a single significant slump.

 

Easily the biggest disappointment was Ramsus; what a horrible season. Last year was such a tease and he crashed right back to mediocrity.

It's too bad the Jays likely won't make it to October. That's when Melky's due to cycle on again.

 

Id take those peaks and valleys over a long season any day...that's consistent positive contribution. QO or resign (if he agrees to DH some).

I was hoping this would be current studs and duds with much less emphasis on annual value (Call it hot streaks and slumps if you wanted). Kind of like after X player has a good game he gets bumped in his own stud thread. What someone did in May shouldn't effect their current stud or dud value. Perhaps guys who are constantly injured and therefore not helping the team could be classified as current duds?

 

Bautista who has had a terrible stretch could be considered a dud right now except he studly smashed 2 homers back to back nights bumping his value for this week.

Even in his worst months he's still a league average bat or slightly better. I suspect every other batter on this team has months way worse than that. He's been our steadiest hitter.

Bautista's worst month has been August, actually ... .239/.327/.455/.782. His prior worst month was a .405 OBP/.819 OPS June. And Edwin came out of the gate slow (.775 OPS in April), and then got his production all busted up by the quad issue (his August is horrid, and his July was going as "planned" until the boo boo). And, well, everyone else sucks or has been hurt often. Melky just looks "consistent" in comparison to poo. Actually, ignoring Reyes's injury-plagued April, he's been really consistent (.716-.785 range).

 

Whats the point. Overall BOTH have had great seasons. Jose or Melky toss up on our most consistent hitters. Potato po"tat"o

Funny when people are saying Melky doesn't go in any slumps but you could probably say he is in one right now. Over the last 7 days he has been Toronto's worst hitter putting up a .192/.192/.231 line

If he keeps throwing his curveball 40% of the time his elbow is going to explode pretty soon.

Juan Francisco would have to have a September like May to dig himself out of the dud list.

Over the last two seasons (min 100IP) Cecil is 12th in xFIP for relievers (better than Doolittle, Rodney, Rosenthal, etc)

 

Small sample alert but he's pretty damn good. Hopefully he gets a lot of high leverage chances down the stretch.

 

Either he or Loup probably gets the closer job next year.

He's been K'ing guys at absurd rates lately, it seems like 2 out of every 3 batters goes down swinging; key word swinging, as his SwStr% this year has bounced to a career high of 15.6%. Guy is downright filthy right now.

Good for him. His career looked like it was on the ropes a few years ago. He's reinvented himself quite nicely.

It's crazy how he went from out of shape and barely cracking 90 mph to being able to dial it up to 95 when he needs to.

Cecil was on the 2012 off season winter tour with the Jays with Jose B and JPA in some place like Winnipeg in -30. When they announced him the crowd went quiet. He on camera said "they don't cheer because I sucked so bad last year"....it was pretty funny.

 

At that time I never imagined the 95 MPH and wicked curve he now has even though he was a wipe out closer in college.

 

He deserves a closer shot over Loup IMO who I also like. His stuff is nastier.
