ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 So the 2012 payroll ended up at 103M instead of 85M meaning they increased it by 20M in 2013 instead of 40Mish that's been thrown around. At least according to Cot's baseball contracts.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 So AA has destroyed Navarro's value by not trading him for something decent. He is complaining that he wants to be traded. keep him on the team = cancer, trade him now = at best get rid of $5M. so amazed there is such little criticism for AA on here.

He is complaining that he wants to be traded. keep him on the team = cancer, trade him now = at best get rid of $5M. so amazed there is such little criticism for AA on here. well, the only problem with that is we don't have full information. If I recall correctly, after the Martin signing, a couple teams "filled" holes by signing replacement level catchers & many are still wondering if those teams are really going to play the entire season with 2 replacement level catchers. In this scenario, AA either asked for too much which caused these team(s) to sign a replacement level immediately to improve their leverage or the other team wasn't being reasonable (or perhaps anticipating a discussion with AA) & to increase leverage, signed the replacement level catchers We do know shortly after that, AA/Gibby come out & publicly state they are fine with Navarro staying with the Jays for the season. One other thing: by trading Navarro for peanuts, AA likely doesn't want to set a precedent that he'll give guys away for whatever if there's a redundancy. It's easy for me to sit here & say, hey, trade Navarro to the Tigers or whoever for a prospect and use the savings on whoever for bullpen help. Best case scenario for the jays is one or more teams starting catcher gets injured soon & a trade of value works out for the Jays. Personally, I don't like the prospect of Navarro on this team - purely from the standpoint he'll take DH time away from other guys who need a rest & as one poster pointed out, you can for sure see Gibby give Navarro solid DH time. Be interesting to see how this plays out - may in fact turn out trading him for a peanut to clear his salary would've been the best move. Otoh, maybe the best case scenario plays out soon. Not easy being a GM - though I think AA imo doesn't factor into the equation as much as he should the impact of having Navarro on the roster during the season.

Keep 'em in your pants this time, boys. I shone a black light on the page with the Stroman comps article and let me tell you it wasn't very pretty.

ScientificReason Verified Member Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 oMFG Donaldson is so good it's ridiculous He is not even costing us that much either, 3 big sluggers all at a bargain, no reason this team should not be contending.
baloojayz Verified Member Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 As good as Boston is projected to be, I feel like what was once a strength could be a weakness this yr in clubhouse environment. Could really see our gang getting along well this year. Boston seems like they could have the same problems as us after that huge Marlins trade offseason. IMO the keys to the season: Reyes and Saunders stay reasonably healthy and Norris claims the 5th starting spot.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Reyes and Saunders stay reasonably healthy and Norris claims the 5th starting spot. Key IMO is the bullpen.... its an area of weakness.... at least two arms need to step up
TheHurl Site Manager Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Doesn't that video make you miss Lowrie? It'd be a cold September 31st in Hell before I ever let Billy Bean run my team.
baloojayz Verified Member Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Key IMO is the bullpen.... its an area of weakness.... at least two arms need to step up We are weakest at 2B, CF, and the pen. 1B should be fine worst case in a platoon. I think if we rolled with the exact same BP of last year we could be looking at a bounce back yr without making any changes. I feel the bullpen identity is better defined this year compared to last which should help out a bunch. Could still use a proven closer to solidify it, but I can't see it happening anymore. That is exactly why I felt Reyes and Saunders staying healthy were absolutely key, along with Norris winning the 5th spot. AA said that the reason they signed Martin was because they couldn't see themselves signing any big name closer or starter and that Martin would hopefully improve the whole staff. If Norris can win the 5th atleast the rotation will look half decent and allow Sanchez and Estrada to strengthen the pen. All we can do to address 2B and CF is hope Travis and Pompey shine. After that, Reyes and Saunders are the next biggest question marks. If they go down to injuries, this ship will just have too many holes to patch. If they have solid campaigns, hitting should carry us through.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Losing Reyes (not so much) losing Saunders ( meh ) by the time Reyes goes down hopefully pompey will be ready to take the lead! Travis and Muni or Goins will be able to more then handle IT defensively! Ou Left field non issue we have enough to cover it up too! If the pen and health of our studs comes into play then Omg we might panic and hit the cursed doomed button! But Reyes and Saunders will not effect us in my eyes as much as you think!

Travis Muni and Goins are already penciled in at 2b and are inadequate as is. You think having no leadoff and both Muni and Goins in the batting order will be no big deal? Remember that Saunders is replacing Melky. If he goes down we have Pillar (Dirks?) to cover both LF and CF/RF depending on how Pompey plays, injuries etc. Health of our studs is moot really. Can't plan around that (same for any team in the league). If our big guys go down unexpectedly we're hooped, just like all other teams in the league, except maybe Boston.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Reyes is not what you think he is! Defensive runs saved vs runs scored will balance off! We are talking this year so really the drop off between Saunders and his replacements will be minor! Defense is a thing! Pompey as a lead off hitter will not cost us a lot from Reyes either, book it! The Future is Now! Viva la playoffs bitches! We have enough offense even without Reyes or Saunders to carry this team!
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 He is not even costing us that much either, 3 big sluggers all at a bargain, no reason this team should not be contending. It will all.come down to pitching I think

ScientificReason Verified Member Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Agree Estrada was a good pickup but I think they're depending too much on Norris and Sanchez. it could work out great but... It could, but I also think they are relying too much on Norris and sanchez, heck for all we know stroman might struggle as the league adjusts and sees more of him too.

Plus Hutch is no guarantee either. I like him a lot but he has been up and dowb since his TJS. Dickey and Buerhle are as close to sure things as it gets but they're mid rotation caliber. I wish they'd added a 1/2 caliber starter either of the last two off seasons. We need multiple guys among Stroman Hutch Estrada to be good in order to have any chance.
shortstop Verified Member Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 If Norris joins the starting rotation, that bullpen doesn't look that bad with both Estrada & Sanchez in there.
