Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Not really worthy of their own thread, but Jays have guys that need to be added to the 40 man that if left exposed might be candidates to be plucked. Do the Jays bother to add Andy Burns, Jon Berti or John Stilson to the 40 man? Taylor Cole is the other interesting name. If someone thinks they could stash him in their pen for the year someone might take a flier on him too. I think all of them would get added, there's going to be a trade in the offseason to clear up a bunch of room as well (Lind,Gose,Juan,Lawrie?)

Right now the Jay,s 40 man roster is at 38 with 4 on the 60 day DL. Once the dust clears and free agents are gone plus DFAs like Francisco and Tolleson then adding the 60 day guys it should be somewhere in the 35 range with holes to fill all over that require a roster spot . Cole seems the only one that could possible merit a roster spot and that is very questionable.

Same with Cole and Stilson (unless his injury is really serious). I also suspect Berti will be added since he was sent to the AFL.
bendera3 Verified Member Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Apparently our ex-Buffalo first baseman Dan Johnson is learning to throw a knuckleball. Someone should tell him if he learns to catch one he may be able to replace Thole.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 The 40 man is no where near as crazy as it was, no big deal. I agree Jay but there is no point adding people to the 40 man that won't get claimed in the rule 5 . i see no one that would be claimed unless like Hurl says someone would try and stash Cole in a bull pen.

They obviously need to replace the major league spots that will come off the 40 man too (Cabrera, Rasmus...whoever's options they don't pick up). I really think Burns is a candidate to get plucked. He's supposed to be a plus defender who can play 5 positions and makes average contact, runs well and might be able to hit lefties (.915 OPS in 500 PAs). Seems to me he'd fit in very well as a 25th man. He seems like he'd have more value to this team than Tolleson or even Valencia.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Be interesting who gets added. I see them trying to slip all of them thru the draft. AA may try a get a RP in the draft too . I would also think there is no room for both Valencia and Mayberry on the bench but i guess that will depend on what type of budget AA has to fill the LF position.

Why would there be room for either on the bench. Both are going to be starters. Valencia at third and Mayberry in the corner outfield.

As he stated these players are elligable to the rule 5 draft if they aren't added to the 40 man. Corey Burns as he pointed out is on the 40 man and can be DFAd to make room . Only confusion was for those who didn't read the whole thread.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Andy Burns = position player Cory Burns = pitcher Both now with the Jays. Hurl just got confused between the two. I didn't actually get confused...just may not have worded it well (more of a continuing conversation between KGM and I). Cory Burns was on my list of guys that could easily be dumped. My discussion was about Andy and whether they should add him to the 40.

I think so, him and schimpf need to be added so they can get a chance at a big league bench job
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 How would a bench of Schimpf, Gose, Burns and Jimenez do? Below average, above average or average?
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 How would a bench of Schimpf, Gose, Burns and Jimenez do? Below average, above average or average? I believe that would fall in the "you don't want to even think about it" category.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 I think Gose would be a solid 4th OF. He had a 1.3 WAR last season and didn't hit at all. Put him in a Jarrod Dyson type of role (4th OF, defensive replacement, pinch runner with a green light) and he'll be solid. He may even be a passable starting option if platooned, especially given how much ground he would cover in the OF, but if Pompey is starting CF and Gose is 4th OF, I think the team is in good shape there. Just find a capable LF. My ideal scenario is buying low on Craig Gentry and putting him in LF. That's a CF calibre glove in LF who can hit a little bit (though he would add to the injury risk for this team). Gentry in LF and Pompey or Gose in CF will cover a ton of ground.

Cory Burns was on my list of guys that could easily be dumped. My discussion was about Andy and whether they should add him to the 40. As I said It was pretty clear had everyone read thru the whole conversation and knew our minor league system. When the name Burns came up most would think Andy Burns

I was hoping he'd earn a promotion to AAA last year, but got off to such a slow start that it just didn't happen. However, as you point out, he's supposed to play good D at several positions in the IF and possibly even corner OF. Schimpf is another guy who could end up being a decent depth/back-up guy. We'll see.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 Projected #Jays arbitration salaries via @mlbtraderumors: Cecil ($2.6 M), Francisco ($2.2), Mayberry ($1.9), Lawrie ($1.8), Valencia ($1.7)

glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 I'd think Lawrie would get more than that (whether he deserves it or not is another story) but the others look about right. Are the Jays really going to bring Francisco back? He is good minor league depth in case of injury but unless they think Luis Mercedes in the DR will fix his swing/approach or they plan on trading Lind and keep Juan as a 1B option, there is no reason to bring him back at that price.

Well, AA never lets players actually get to arbitration anyway. He'll sign Lawrie to a 1 year deal before the arb deadline like he always does. How much? Hard to say. Francisco would be great as AAA backup but someone else will probably give him another shot on a major league deal.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 Re Francisco Probably Baltimore or Seattle And he'll probably kill us next year LOL
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted October 17, 2014 Posted October 17, 2014 Re Francisco Probably Baltimore or Seattle And he'll probably kill us next year LOL he better not, we know he can't hit the breaker.
