GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 The Royals have been acquiring a lot of flyball pitchers and great defensive outfielders, and it's worked pretty well in that spacious park. I imagine they value Dyson appropriately. Josh Willingham, stud defensive OF
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 I posted this in the Reyes 2015 thread already, so if you've read this already - my apologies As a dreamer, here is my ideal position player off season... sign Cuban FA Thomas for RF, re sign Melkey for LF, move Jbats to 3b, Lawrie is full time 2B. Gose/Pillar platoon in CF. Lineup would look like this 1. Reyes SS (as much as I hate typing that) 2. Melkey LF 3. Bautista 3B 4. Lind DH (with mayberry platoon) 5. EE 1B 6. Navarro C 7. Thomas RF 8. Lawrie 2B 9. Gose CF (with Pillar platoon) bench Izturas (Goins would be ideal, but Izturas makes too much) bench Mayberry bench Pillar Bench Thole now as for pitching......
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 ^ Bautista will not play 3b
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 ^ Bautista will not play 3b He'll play what I tell 'em to play... http://i.ytimg.com/vi/zfTXQJbnXaM/hqdefault.jpg
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 ^ Bautista will not play 3b so we have a RF with a good arm, but limited range who refuses to move to 3B (although he has said this year he will play where the team needs him) We have a SS with limited range due to declining speed (and injuries) but refuses to DH or move positions (although I don't think he can play 2B either) WE have a 1B - EE, who prefers to DH because he is embarrassed by how bad he is defensively and can better prepare for his next AB in the clubhouse What the f*** kind of team do we have? that's not a team its a bunch of guys playing exhibition games for fun and acting like spoiled, overpaid slow pitch players if its true that the manager and GM can't play guys where they think the team will be helped most, then I am ready to move on and cheer for a competitive team that wants to win
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 I don't think it is fair to group Bautista and Edwin with Reyes. This season, Bautista has played 1B and CF. Edwin volunteered to play LF (and failed miserably at it). The only guy who has never moved from his position is Reyes, and that's pretty damn telling.

I highly doubt anyone in the Jays brass even suggested to Reyes that he move to 2B.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Sign Hanley, retain Melky and pick up Linds option......Profit. All other options declined all other FA's walk. Pretty much leaves payroll the same. If the plan is to have Pillar and Goins as part of the 25 man roster the plan should be scrapped and a total fire sale implemented. Agreed. Though if you let all the BP guys walk (McGowan, Janssen, Santos, Morrow) you need to sign a couple to replace them. So a few $$ will be required.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Sanchez Cecil Loup Redmond Jenkins Delabar Nolin/Romero/Drabek/Rasmussen. Of those I think I'd only count on Cecil, Redmond, Loup and maybe Jenkins. Sanchez will be a starter. Nolin will be in AAA. Everyone else, yuck.

Fujikawa to round it out please.

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Anyone think Justin Turner of the Dodgers could be available? If the Dodgers resign Hanley Ramirez their going to have a surplus of IF's. Dodgers have s*** at catcher and maybe Navarro peaks their interest? Justin Turner for Navarro? Turner would be a real nice fit at 2nd and can SS/3rd too.

I like to formally apologize to you. I thought you were wrong for turning your back on this franchise, in recent times I have now come to understand that this franchise doesn't really deserve our supporters. you are a intelligent poster
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 I put this in the Colby thread but should be here. Colby is obviously gone this year On a negative note, the Gose/Pillar platoon is not looking so good - neither have convinced me (over the past few weeks, and during their multiple prior callups) that they'll be able to provide even remotely acceptable plate performance even in a strict L/R platoon. 1. We HAVE to retain Melky or find someone as good for a similar price (good luck) 2. We may need to acquire a better 4th OF who bats right. I no longer think we can assume Pillar is even an adequate 4th OF at this point. Yes, he has only had 210 MLB PA, but I just don't see any skills that make me willing to be patient with him. He MIGHT still become an average MLB bat, but he might not. How long do we want to wait to see if that happens, and how many runs/games do we want to sacrifice with mediocre defense and high strikeouts in the meantime?

It would be dumb to just hand Pillar a job when he still has options. Imagine the depth chart if you're working from Pillar downwards? He needs to be AAA depth. Mayberry is nominally a CF but he's actually terrible out there so he's not cut out for the role either. Is there a Rajai Davis 2.0 out there and how much would such a player cost?

Not that 12 games is meaningful but just to get his feet wet. Might as well reduce Bautista's playing time now and give the kid a few starts
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 1. We HAVE to retain Melky or find someone as good for a similar price (good luck) I don't think we have to retain Melky. Personally, i think he's going to get over paid. All his value comes in his bat and i think you can find the 2-3 wins more efficiently. Honestly wouldn't you rather use the savings from Melky + move the 5 million from Navarro and use that $ get to Russell Martin. I think you do whatever it takes to get Martin. Find a cheap platoon LF who can hit RHP and platoon him with Mayberry JR. Obviously we can't be having platoons at every position so if we were able to get Martin i would be fine with running Gose out there every day in CF and using a platoon in LF. If Gose can even hit 80 wRC+ he would probably be worth close to 2 wins over a season with his defense and base running.

I would consider that but I can't see AA doing anything but sticking with Navarro next year. 2 years ago was the time to sign Martin. We missed a HUGE opportunity. (Of course so did 20+ other teams including the Yankees)

He's a minor league gold glover (whatever that's worth), he's a switch hitter. He definitely has an attractive skill set but boy have the Jays been aggressive with him. For a non-elite prospect, he sure has flown through the levels. I find that a little scary. Then again Gose is kind of scary too for his own reasons. One thing I'd hate to see is all the eggs being put in the young players' basket. Jays need to bring in some veteran OFs to insulate themselves so maybe it's just as well that Pompey isn't playing.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Well to be fair. It's pretty scary being a fan of this team. How so. Every franchise tied to this city is s loser. Just look at the bills. They were garbage for every year of bills in toronto, this year they ended that and the bills have started great Some of us have already accepted that this city is meant to be a perrenial sports loser
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 The Dodgers have a lot of expendable players we could use. That's why I think that's a perfect spot to trade Reyes while absorbing Ethier's deal. Throw in a Guerrero, or Van Slyke, etc, type and it will add depth to the team. Not sure they'd want Navarro again, but if they do, that would work as well.

Other clubs understand pitch framing They understand that 4-5 balls to strikes in a game usually is the difference between losing and winning.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 ^ Please tell me you're not suggesting there's any causality here Not sure if there is causation but if we look at the numbers alone Toronto is the worst city in the last 20 years when it comes to sports franchises. Bills were decent in 2004 then this bills in Toronto started. For eight years they were terrible. Finally Bills in Toronto is over and all of a sudden they are 2-0 with two underdog wins
