burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 It is that crazy to think they just might? That's a hell of an expense that they took on out of the blue. The Blue Jays are a big enough brand that you won't take money from them so they lose more money. Rogers won't sacrifice a $700 million property because of money they spent elsewhere.
Brenner Verified Member Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 I really don't see McGowan returning anything on a 4 million investment. I think it's pretty obvious at this point that McGowan will not come back and haunt this team the way Chris Carpenter did. It's quite safe to pull the plug. meh like I said I think its borderline. Certainly not alot of value at $4 mil but on the other hand are the Jays going to be able to sign a better FA reliever for under $4 mil? Possibly but no guarantee. We have the rest of the year to evaluate.

BTS Community Moderator Posted August 21, 2014 Author Posted August 21, 2014 Not as a reliever? 4.09 xFIP as a reliever this year. McGowan sucks.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Meh, I think it'll be a mistake to let him walk, if Wagner and Stilson were healthy, I'd have no problem with it. P.S. I knew you were going to post his xFIP... AA can't afford to waste payroll on McGowan. He can find better bargains.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 After years of waiting, we finally go to see what McGowan can produce when healthy and it turns out it isn't much. He doesn't have the length to be a starter but he's not dominant enough for short relief either. Back end relievers with no options aren't really assetts. He still has good speed on the fastball so maybe you bring him back and focus exclusively on trying to turn him into a max effort one inning guy but you don't want to burn much more than a roster spot on him if that.

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Brandon MaCarthy and Justin Masterson might be reasonable targets. I wonder if the Padres will pick up John Johnson's 4 million contract.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 That's a pretty nice list of starters In addition, several of them were traded mid-season too, meaning that there's zero chance they end up with draft pick compensation
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Can Seattle afford to keep Iwakuma?? He's gonna get PAID.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Iwakuma is a FA too, sheeeit.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Iwakuma is a FA too, sheeeit. Obvious Yankees target
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 Author Posted August 22, 2014 Seattle has a $7 million option on Kuma.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Seattle has a $7 million option on Kuma. What a steal of a contract.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Obvious Yankees target Scherzer scares me, he would make a good candidate for them too.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 (edited) OTOH, the 2B free agent market still kinda sucks. Of course, COULD move Reyes or Lawrie to 2B and therefore shop from the 3B or SS list Again, * = 2015 team option Second Basemen Emilio Bonifacio Alexi Casilla Mark Ellis Rafael Furcal Kelly Johnson Nick Punto * Brian Roberts Ramon Santiago Rickie Weeks * Ben Zobrist * Shortstops Mike Aviles * Asdrubal Cabrera Alex Gonzalez J.J. BTS Community Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 Author Posted August 22, 2014 What a steal of a contract. Say what you want about Jack Z, but he absolutely nailed the Kuma signing and subsequent extension.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Seattle has a $7 million option on Kuma. Ah, you're right. The BP/Cots list was wrong. I fixed my post. Good thing, Seattle obviously picks that up and keeps him from coming East for at least 1 more year.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Time to change our opinions on the Mariners GM. He be an idiot before, now he's ok....talk about fools...
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 I feel like McCarthy will be resigned by New York which is a shame because I really wanted the Blue Jays to trade for him this season.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 Author Posted August 22, 2014 Time to change our opinions on the Mariners GM. He be an idiot before, now he's ok....talk about fools... Not everything is black and white. Bad players make good plays, bad GMs make good moves etc... Jack Z did a great job with Iwakuma.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Say what you want about Jack Z, but he absolutely nailed the Kuma signing and subsequent extension. What's also pretty cool/impressive is that after signing Felix he's had his best two years of his career, which is crazy considering he was already as good as they get.

Despite a declining fastball velocity too. Guy is just ridiculous.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 Author Posted August 22, 2014 His roster construction is still a disaster, regardless of the position the team is in right now. Yeah, and he's apparently kind of a bag of dicks. Finishing with 86 wins or whatever isn't that impressive.
