Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Mayo's usually the worst at this ********, I remember one year he had Christian Colon as a top 50 guy, even though he had been stinking up the minors. But he was picked 4ht overall, therefore he must be good!!! It's not just new draftees, he gives these guys who were picked high unwarranted credentials. One of the many reasons why I don't put much stock in MLB.com's lists.

Any of you prospect buffs want to give me some insight on what makes this kid so special? Good feel for hitting with an advanced approach at the plate. Good power upside which hasn't really materialized yet, but many argue that it is because he already looks to use the entire field when hitting. He's also got an above-average arm at 3B, albeit average at best range. I'd personally rank Barreto over him as well.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Eh. Not the greatest list. Jesse Winker too low
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 How does Dwight Smith not crack the top 20? He was good last year and he's even better this year while not being overly old.
0ctobyte Verified Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Daniel Norris and Pompey made some great strides this year.

Maahfaace Verified Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Everyone should post their top 20 list and grades for each tool, it would be interesting to see where the rankings end up.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Mitch Nay is a bit overrated IMO, Barreto should be ahead of him for sure. Any of you prospect buffs want to give me some insight on what makes this kid so special? It's always key to pretty much ignore stat lines in the lower minors, for the most part until a kid gets to High A at least, they're still going to be judged on their tools. Nay has a good, not great hit tool and makes loud contact with excellent power potential and doesn't strikeout a ton(though does need to improve). Good strike zone awareness(of course needs to be refined) and could stick at 3b defensively. Projects as a solid everyday major leaguer with the chance to be all star calibre if his bat continues to develop. Here's a quick writeup from John Sickels in January of this year: 3) Mitch Nay, 3B, Grade B: Aggressive grade for rookie ball player but I believe in this bat. Good power potential, has some pure hitting skills, controls the zone reasonably and avoids strikeouts. Needs more defensive polish but bat can be special. Side note though, I'd still probably rank Barreto higher.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 If we're ignoring stat lines in the lower minors, I still have Barreto > Nay.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Seems like the tool grades weren't too well thought of. Norris's slider is a 50 (worst of the 4 pitches)and isn't that his best secondary pitch and a true plus pitch according to scouts? And his changeup is a 60 grade with that pitch being his worst secondary offering. I know it is supposed to be a future grade but I have a hard time believing that his changeup will ever become a full grade higher than his slider.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Lol I pay no attention to MLB.com's tool grades.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Mitch Nay is a bit overrated IMO, Barreto should be ahead of him for sure. Any of you prospect buffs want to give me some insight on what makes this kid so special? a couple guys already covered this but generally power stats are among the easiest to develop if the raw power is there. Nay is very well built and displays loads of power in BP, Baseball America still graded him a 70 raw power coming into the season. He doesn't strike out a ton....so if even part of that raw power develops at all everything in his stat lines should rocket up. Last season they removed his waggle and changed his stride. Haven't heard what they are working on this year but chances are, seeing as it's the Jays, they are probably trying to change his up-the-middle approach and make the power come around. Barreto gets that "not a SS long-term" tag thrown on him and that brings him down in most rankings. Not saying he'll be bad where he ends up but as I've mentioned before in the minors once a tag has been thrown on a player it usually takes a solid run in AAA to remove it. Nay with power developing plays in RF or 3B...without the power developing it's utility guy. Barreto and his maximum 10 HR, with solid doubles power likely just plays at 2B if he doesn't stick at SS. In the end their ceilings are Nay - Middle of the order 3B or RF. Barreto - Top of the order 2B or SS. Floors are constant disappointment.
