Honestly, what advantage would there be to pitching your closer, set-up guy and starter in reverse order like that? I really don't see any.

You're going to want to use your closer and set-up man in the game, that's a given. You don't want to save them until a high-leverage spot later in the game since that opportunity may not come. So get them out of the way first, then play the rest of the game situationally. If two lefties are due up in the fifth, go to Cecil and postpone Stroman's appearance.

Yes but high leverage is largely a creation of the order you put the pitchers in. If you use Janssen and Loup and Stroman blows the game, that's no better than having Stroman get hit hard and not having high leverage inning for Janssen and Loup. So what if you guaranteed that Janssen and Loup went in the game, the importance of the innings they give you to the final outcome is still just as dependant on what Stroman does and you're f***ing with people's comfort and habits for no good reason. Relievers like having a rough idea when they're coming in. They like to know roughly when to slam down their red bull and what not and Stroman has a ritual he goes through when he's starting that wouldn't be the same when he's coming in form the bullpen. You'd mess with that just to artificially assure that you don't miss your chance of putting Janssen and Loup in the game.

I think there would be more harm than good with that scenario. Janssen could feel uncomfortable starting a game and then you are down early. While I hate how intangibles are used sometimes there is a human element and taking someone out of their comfort zone is not a bad thing.

 

Also whats to say Stroman is not better in the first couple innings because starters put up weaker numbers than relievers usually because they have to face the order multiple times and that would be the first time through the order.

 

Just start Stroman and use the bullpen like you would normally.

It's fun to speculate, but it is just speculation. It really depends on the situation and who the Jays would be facing (trouble against lefties, trouble against the knuckleball). To be honest you could make a case for any of the 5 guys in the rotation, which we should really count that as a blessing. AT LEAST this year the starting rotation hasn't been a rotating clown show where if the Jays were in the position of the playoffs, you would scratch 3 guys off the list immediately.

I surely wouldn't be picking Buerhle, he puts way too many balls in play and relies on defense and stranding runners, not exactly the recipe you want in a 1 game playoff. You want the guy with better swing and miss stuff IMO.

Has to be Stroman. He is the best pitcher on the staff. Honestly I would not want Buehrle pitching it. Too many balls put into play and his command hasn't been the greatest this year.

We havent made the playoffs in 20 years for god's sake. Pull all the stops!

He pitched 120 innings last year combined with AA and AFL so he should be able to throw at least 150 this year. He's thrown 100 so far which would mean 50 more innings if you go by that estimate. With 56 games left in the regular season you could say 11 starts left for each pitcher.

 

Not a stretch to see him reach that 150 IP by mid September but if this team is in a playoff race and he is not showing any fatigue there is no way you can shut him down.

I think Stroman should be able to handle the workload because he has a really athletic delivery and hasn't had any arm trouble in the past. Knock on wood.
