Insert Pitcher Name Here It's crazy how much I hear this term in the context of paid baseball "experts" and fans use to describe unproven and often fringe MLB pitchers. To me "great stuff" are guys that have good mechanics, can throw 95+, late breaking movement on the fastball, can paint all 4 quadrants of the plate and can change speeds with a nasty secondary pitch. Most of all, guys that dominate throughout their career. David price has "great stuff", Pedro Martinez has "great stuff". Misused definition of "great stuff" that is used today in baseball. great stuff - an excuse that scouts, casual fans, broadcasters and analysts apply to pitchers with above average movement on their primary and/or secondary pitches that a) can't throw strikes on a consistent enough basis over a long sample size are often injured c) are successful under an incredibly short sample size d) combination of a and b. Sorry for the rant but this has been bugging the hell out me because I hear it all the time misused not only in the Jays circles but around the league as well.
Muck Bartinez Verified Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Jeremy Jeffress has great stuff.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Why does being injured and/or not having control mean a pitcher can't have great stuff?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Strasburg is the very definition of great stuff

Control, injuries, and success have nothing to do with "stuff". Great "stuff" can sometimes yield success, but it's not the same. Success is the end result, "Stuff" is not. Perhaps the entire baseball world doesn't have it all wrong and maybe it's just you? Crazy thought, but let's go with that.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Strasburg is the very definition of great stuff Does dickey have a great stuff?

GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 lol looks like you don't share Deadpool's concerns. I've been making cracks about Dickey's run-in shortly after the trade with the Mets broke.

jays76 Verified Member Posted July 26, 2014 Posted July 26, 2014 Why have you decided to troll, honest question? Probably hardcore Hutch disdain, I've seen him get beatdown in person too many times this year and it's jaded me. I know he's just a kid and coming off TJ but I don't think he's going live up to his potential or ever be a great one, just my personal intuition however hopefully I'm proven wrong..
