Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 Sure in theory but it's only ever clear in hindsight whether a player has peaked or has bottomed out. Maybe this is a good as Pompey will ever look (I'm assuming you were referencing him above) and maybe he's going to climb up the charts (so to speak). If it's the former, the team will really regret selling high if it's the later, they will regret selling low but they'll only know that for sure after the fact. Pompey is a prime example. If he wasn't from Mississauga i'd be calling for his trade for Franklin or some other young 2B. OF's are not hard to get for a team with a $130M payroll

Maybe this is a good as Pompey will ever look (I'm assuming you were referencing him above) and maybe he's going to climb up the charts (so to speak). If it's the former, the team COULD really regret NOT selling high if it's the later, the team COULD regret selling low but they'll only know that for sure after the fact. Fixed myself here.

OF's are not hard to get for a team with a $130M payroll Mere OFs and CFs and not the same. CFs can be a real bitch to lock up and a whole slew of terrrible contracts have been handed out to them (Matthew Jr., Wells, Upton). That being said the team does have Gose and both him and Pompey have similar floors so maybe Pompey is expendable but god forbid you go to the free agent market for a CF. That's where GMs go to die.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Way too early, but he's been locating his high 90s fastball and showing a nice curve. It's hard to refrain from getting excited over this guy's capability.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 But my calculator says hes no good..... Then your calculator sucks. saber loves the guy
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 I wonder if Sanchez could very well end up being a reliever long-term, possibly the closer . There is precedent out there, most notably off the top of my head - Papelbon, Feliz, Chapman Sanchez most definitely doesn't have an issue with stamina, but I think because right now he only has two true dominating pitches he may benefit from being exposed less often.

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 Starter #4 >>> CloserZZ but we can have the next Daniel Bard! pre-derp, of course
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2014 Posted July 28, 2014 If we can't get something good for him, Sanchez becoming a closer could work pretty well.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 I think this is a very real possibility. That's pretty much worst case scenario at this point, barring injury
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 I think tonight was the only time he reached 3 balls in a count
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 All I know is the advanced geniuses don't even think he can be a good reliever so forget about Sanchez, he's a AA talent at best.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 Funny how his control just suddenly improved after the call up.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 Funny how his control just suddenly improved after the call up. Working short stints out of the pen probably has a lot to do with it.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 Funny how his control just suddenly improved after the call up. it improved about a month ago in AAA.... his control was very good his last few AAA starts something has clicked in his delivery
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 He's exactly as advertised. A lot of potential but can struggle with his fastball control. Still I was about to skip his first inning and decided to watch when I saw it was him coming in. Exciting player.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 With Jannsen surely leaving at the end of this season (since Rogers/AA don't seem to keep their promises or word), Sanchez will step in nicely into the closer's role. Guess we'll have to find a pitcher to start the season, though. Maybe Norris can be a mid season call-up too...

There was talk of some changes to his delivery so maybe the AAA pitching coach, Randy St-Claire, helped him out.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 By the way, props to Ang for being a Sanchez booster throughout

We'll see what happens...

There'd be no reason to retain Janssen past this year anyways, regardless of any "unhappy" narrative, which is probably wholly overblown. You sure do t want to offer a QO and risk paying him 15 million next year. And you don't really want a closer who's stuff is declining slightly who relies on command control with very little margin of error to be in the 7 million per year range when you have bigger problems to address and need payroll room.
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
