We all thought JPA was going to be a mainstay of the Blue Jays for years to come when he first came up, especially with his initial splash. People who don't admit to that are probably lying.

 

Speak for yourself. Whether I was just jealous of his pearly whites, have a great sixth sense about these things, or just believe in the curse...I predicted JPA to be a bust from the moment he was in the high minors. My JP Atred is well documented around these parts.

Yeah I don't think anyone saw that train wreck coming. He seemed like he could be if nothing else a 2nd division regular. Too bad he wasn't traded before he got much worse then that.

 

 

Edit: O.K. Hurl saw it coming but I think most people who didn't like him still never imagined he would set records for offensive ineptitude.

That was a good day. It's always exciting to see a young guy come up and mash right off the hop. I was thinking, we finally have some luck with a prospect. And all I ever wanted was a guy with a .250 average who could mash 20+ homers and play average defence, and I thought we had YEARS of that with JPA. So wrong. So sad.

Hey now it was just the "Greatest Jays catcher of all time". Which doesn't necessarily mean he has to even make an all star team. I still believe in TdA quite a bit. I like Pentecost too...but I believe in this curse which means 1B or bust for him.

Whatever value he has is tied to his defence. A 700 OPS as a 24 year old in AAA doesn't really move the needle but it's fine if it's tied to a very good defensive game. Hard to know how good minor league catcher defense really is. We didn't hear boo about Gomes defense when he was in the minors and turns out he's an elite catcher.

Travis d'Arnaud is far from a bust, he's been mashing since being recalled, plus his defense is above average.

 

He has been playing well, but Dickey has pitched well in the last month or so.

He is what he is, probably a really good defensive catcher and no offensive ability whatsoever.

Sounds like you accidentally listened to JaysTalk or read Wilner's blog.

 

I don't think he was ever projected to be a plus defensive catcher and pretty bad offensively. Could be a decent backup.

Huh? He's always been considered a plus defender, the stick is the worry. You're right about the decent back up.
