FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 I like the team Oakland's built, but they've choked so many times in the playoffs in the Beane era that I just can't buy them as the overwhelming favorite until I see results.

This is how you get to a world series win. Often teams make the playoffs multiple times in consecutive years before they finally win the world series. Oakland will finally do it this year after coming close in previous years. The Jays will need a few more years of at least making the playoffs before they will win a world series. They are where oakland was a few years ago. It would be considered a victory if the jays just make a wild card but anything less than a world series win for oakland would be unacceptable.
Convo Verified Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 Man, Oakland just looks so solid everywhere... and they don't under-value pitching and defense like many other teams (*COUGH* BLUE JAYS *COUGH*)
Art Vandelay Verified Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 The Jays swept the A's earlier this season, yeah?
Solaxys Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 The Jays swept the A's earlier this season, yeah? We swept 3 game; they swept us 4 game. Oakland +1.
CJ-Freeway Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 Oakland looks tough but I think you shouldn't write off the Angels just yet. They're only 3.5 back in the AL West and they will most likely bust a move before the trade deadline. Let's see what the Angels do before handing out the AL West to the A's. In addition, the Tigers will also make some moves before the deadline so don't hand out the WS to the A's just yet.
pickoff22 Verified Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 Yes one thing I've learned about baseball is that the team that looks the best always wins the world series. Like the Tigers the past few years.
shortstop Verified Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 Verlander called it what it is - to have what Beane considers a much better #1 pitching in big playoff games...last 2 playoffs, they had Gray and then ?? go up against Verlander...Beane wanted his stud this time around...
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 No one is an "overwhelming favorite" in the playoffs.

Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 The best rotation in baseball the past 2 years couldn't win a world series
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 Man, Oakland just looks so solid everywhere... and they don't under-value pitching and defense like many other teams (*COUGH* BLUE JAYS *COUGH*) So it is your opinion that the Blue Jays are "*COUGH*" for undervaluing defense. It is also your opinion, in regards to Chase Headley, that "if the Jays are really pursuing him for this year they are dumb as f***". Makes sense.

Heard the same thing in the early 2000's when the Hudson/Mulder/Zito/Giambi/Tejada/Chavez teams racked up wins in the regular season and couldn't win a playoff series. Honestly, I think Beane feeds into it with his excuse that "the playoffs are all about luck." Regardless, they need to start winning in the playoffs before they can be trusted as the favorites. A whopping one playoff series win since 1990 isn't cutting it.
