BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 A veteran switch hitter who can play 3 positions (sort of) with a lifetime .330 OBP. Given whats happened with the revolving door to Buff and some of the bench issues brought on by trips to the DL for our regulars, and match ups against LHP etc...I remembered this guy and thought it would be nice to have him about now...flaws and all. Pillar, Gose, Kawa, Tolleson, Francisco, Maestroani etc etc have all had their share of time, and some have contributed. But we do miss that stable vet presence at the plate and on the field. Watching Gose and whatever yesterday fail to execute the sac bunts highlighted that our bench depth is becoming more of an issue. Too bad for that freak injury. Didn't really get any notice at the time.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Oh s*** I totally forgot about the guy. We still have him for one more season, correct?
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 He was playing well to start the season too
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2014 Author Posted July 3, 2014 Oh s*** I totally forgot about the guy. We still have him for one more season, correct? Ya, I think an option 2016..not sure on that.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Izturis is nothing special but the annoying thing about losing him is that the Jays have had to use two guys at the 2B position instead of one. At least Izturis has switch hitting going for him. Having one less platoon to run, would have made it easier to keep Kratz around and run a more effective DH platoon.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Ya, I think an option 2016..not sure on that. Three million dollar option with a one million buyout. They could probably buy him out and re-sign him (ideally to a minor league deal) and still come under the 3 million.

Didn't say he was great but he is as good if not better, as a vet with versatility and SW abilities, than some we have been playing. His career #s are better than last few yrs, but he was off to a decent start this yr and imo had the ability to contribute. Doesn't really matter...he gone.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Tolleson is tanking out of control. Not sure how much longer they can keep him on the big club.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2014 Author Posted July 3, 2014 Tolleson is tanking out of control. Not sure how much longer they can keep him on the big club. case in point...
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Tolleson is tanking out of control. Not sure how much longer they can keep him on the big club. Right-handed middle infield options are non-existent. The only other one was Diaz and he's out the org I think. Mune, Goins, Schimpf, all left-handers.
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Diaz still with buffalo but optioned off the 40 man
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Diaz still with buffalo but optioned off the 40 man I guess it really doesn't matter because that 155/322/268 slash line in AAA screams sub-replacement level. He may be right-handed but he ain't no bat.

In Izturis' case that just means he's equally bad from both sides. Having big splits is a good thing for fringe players since you can platoon them to simulate having a player who's actually decent.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 In Izturis' case that just means he's equally bad from both sides. That may have been the case last year but he's been a decent hitter in the past and he did seem to be bouncing back this year. Having big splits is a good thing for fringe players since you can platoon them to simulate having a player who's actually decent. I understand that in theory and it was working quite well for awhile with the Francisco/Tolleson platoon but we don't seem to be getting much out of the 2B platoon anymore, just using two spots to get the equivalent of one mediocre switch-hitter. Izturis could give you that.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 They need to weld a new finger on Lawrie and get him back asap. The defense suffers so much when he's out it's ridiculous Not just at 3B, but the ripple effect on the rest of the infield is enormous. We now have sub-par defenders at every infield position. (well Kawasaki is normally a decent defender at 2B, don't know what happened to him last night)
jayswin11 Verified Member Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 I was thinking about that a couple days ago.
Governator Community Moderator Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 Sorry folks but Izturis sucks His early showing this season was just his version of Juan Francisco. Mandatory regression.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2014 Author Posted July 4, 2014 Sorry folks but Izturis sucks I realize you can only polish a turd so much vis a vis Izturis, but we have a lot of "sucks" right now on the field. I think he sucks less than Tolleson and some others and his career numbers do not indicate "mandatory regression". moot anyway...
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 Regarless we need a real infielder Kawasaki is fine as a backup but he should not be anything more Beltre or Utley (with salary relief) would be brilliant, though ideally AA nabs a good young 2B with upside
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 At this point, I miss Bonifacio more...lol.
