BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 McGuire is a pure shitballer who spent four goddamn years at AA. Drabek has the stuff to have a chance to contribute to a major league bullpen. Drabek >>>>>>> McGuire tomato tomoatoe potato potatoe...both amount to shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic. Neither provides what this team will need for SP as the season wears on....
Statman Verified Member Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Drabek has the quality/movement of what Sergio Santos has on his pitches, the control of Brandon Morrow and mindset of Ricky Romero.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Quiet evening on here - thought I'd be provocative Is it his turn to get a shot? Happ is bad. Dickey is grumbling with groin issue. Hutch is having problems. Drabek has been at least decent in AAA Buffalo all year and his last 5 weeks have been frankly good. Walking less than 3/9 all season, only 2 starts (I think) where he's walked more than 2. Worth a shot for a few weeks?? Not sure why the peanut Gallery is giving you a hard time. Give him a shot for a few weeks if there is an injury or someone really implodes. The peanut gallery must be on auto-pilot this morning. "Drabek you are our only hope. Pitch like your Dad did in the early 90s and lead us to the pennant." unreasonable. peanut gallery should go to your house and shame you. "Drabek. We have no fifth starter. Please come to Toronto and pitch just a little better then you did 2 years ago. You might actually help us" reasonable. peanut gallery should say "doubt he'll help but why not if nothing better is on the radar."

It's OK, I knew they would He really was that bad in 2012 so the fear is deserved that he might be terrible again. But if we really do need an extra starter until the all start break (and I'm feeling like we do with all the problems) then he's who I would give a shot right now. That's all I'm saying. If we need a starter 10 days fom now I'd rather try Drabek than call Hendriks back up. Edited June 22, 2014 by G-Snarls

If the stuff is there, there is no reason not to give him a shot. Pitchers are funny he might surprise us. I haven't heard a scouting report. If he's throwing 85 or something then he will get killed here.
Nox Verified Member Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Drabek, McGuire... Those are 2 particularly ugly options.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 22, 2014 Author Posted June 22, 2014 Drabek, McGuire... Those are 2 particularly ugly options. Then maybe we should trade for Hamel, Price or Shark and keep those guys lower on the depth chart...
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Drabek, McGuire... Those are 2 particularly ugly options. As was Jesse Chavez at one point. And Scott Kazmir went Romero and came back. People want certainty. If you say "lets sift through the s*** looking through for a diamond" they don't really know what the f*** you are talking about. They yell at you and laugh at you and say "good luck, your just going to get s*** all over the place and make a huge mess of everything." And they are right. You have to be careful when looking through s***. But if you do it carefully and have some luck it can work. Not saying it is easy. I am sure I'd make a mess if I tried. But you get the best superscouts money can buy, and some analytical guys, and together they can sort through the s***.... maybe...
Nox Verified Member Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Then maybe we should trade for Hamel, Price or Shark and keep those guys lower on the depth chart... Or just acquire some non-replacement level depth before the season starts. Woops, too late.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 22, 2014 Author Posted June 22, 2014 Well that's it too. We aren't watching these guys in AAA so all we have to go by is the performance numbers which are important but don't tell the whole story. AA has to trust the coaching staff down there to let him know who seems to have the stuff to make the jump up to the majors. Sometimes he goes to watch himself.

What about just a lot of guys who went "scout school" (a 1 week endeavor) and have never actually shown to be good at what they do?
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Barring injury, rotation is set for the next few weeks so this all moot. Kratz will get Happ back on track, I'm sure Kratz just had a bad day yesterday. On a normal Kratz day, he would've framed the s*** out of Happ's pitches and led him to a 7IP, 5-hit, no-walk, 7K start. Happ is just too big and strong not to succeed. He was just a little bit off his game yesterday.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 23, 2014 Author Posted June 23, 2014 I didn't know that he had been "officially" moved to the bullpen OTOH...
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 I'd give Drabek a chance up here. What could it hurt. It's not like he could do that much worse then Happ.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 I'd give Drabek a chance up here. What could it hurt. It's not like he could do that much worse then Happ. Oh he most certainly could but I agree with the sentiment. A healthy Nolin would be 100x more interesting than Drabek but desperate times...

Happ doesn't take well to being dicked around - too bad, do what's best for the team. If he stinks it up again he should be moved to the pen as swing man 2. Although the rotation is "full" right now, the schedule is relentless with 16 consecutive game days from now till the all star break. Given Hutch and Dickey being iffy recently with possible stamina + groin issues, giving someone a couple of spot starts might make sense. If I need such spot starts over the next 2.5 weeks I'd pick Drabek, not Hendriks or Rogers (bad) or Nolin (injured)
wardhenke1 Verified Member Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 f*** it, let's give Romero a chance. If nothing else it will be entertaining watching him walk the first 9 batters..... "Ohhhh, that was so close to being called a strike." Tabler. "Yep. Hard to get the benefit of a close call when you've thrown 15 straight balls...." Martinez.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 What's wrong with Nolin? I've been forgetting about him. I wouldn't mind seeing him up here sometime this year too.
Governator Community Moderator Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 It's all good guys, Morrow will be back soon to save the day.

I looked it up. He missed 3.5 weeks in May. Started pitching again June 6. Has appeared in 3 games since, never going more than 3 innings and got rocked in his second appearance.

To the people who missed the sarcasm? Drabek and McGuire if we are really lucky will be moved to the pen and MAYBE we can still eke out some value. Edited June 23, 2014 by kgm1
