Sept Call Ups

I know it's early, but the Jays could be in the thick of things come Sept. I'm not trolling here. I'm kind of wondering how a playoff team uses Sept call ups vs how the Jays have traditionally used them. I guess it's always used to reward prospects and that is how I have always seen the Jays use it.

 

Do you bring up as many pitchers as you can in order to rest certain guys in the rotation and pen?

 

Would you bring up a guy like Kenny Wilson, who obviously does not deserve to be in the majors, for the sole purpose of late game speed off the bench?

 

Do you bring up guys like Dan Johnson and Brad Glenn for bats off the bench?

 

Diaz, Goins and/or Kawasaki for defensive replacements?

 

For a playoff contender, should you have 40 guys up, just in case you may need one of them for what ever situation may present itself?

It might be silly, but it is a rule in the books. I'm just wondering how to maximize it.

For sure a good defensive MIF, any 1-2 of Goins/Diaz/Kawasaki

 

Another BP arm or two, anyone who's healthy

 

And you'll have both Pillar and Gose (which we won't in July and August, barring injuries)

 

Those players might see some action. All the rest added to the expanded 40 man roster won't if we're in a playoff race.

Consarnit! Back to the topic, I'd like to see Goins as a callup over the other MIF's strictly because of his D. Juan Francisco in as a PH for Tolleson, but then Goins to play 2nd instead of Lawrie to 2 and Juan to 3.

He is still great defensively. If you can have him there for late inning replacement for defense.... wouldn't you?

I mean, literally a designated runner (I guess he can play defense too). I guess that's what I am wondering, if you have the spot on the bench... should you not use it? Even for obscure, but potential game changing situations?

I think it's one of the greatest nuances of baseball. Having essentially 4 different levels (really about 12 but some of the differences are subtle) of players. 25 man with no options, 25 man with options, 40 man not on the 25 man roster and not on the 40 man roster. Managing it is a great skill and managing September call ups to help out a potential playoff team an even greater one. Eventually baseball will probably set a number for increased roster sizes (probably 28 to 30) as no one is using a full 40 man (each call up costs about $65K in salary so it's not insignificant).

Sure. Why not.

 

Also he's the type of guy who might get a LITTLE bit of playing time if we are out of contention, or conversely if we were to clinch a playoff spot with a few games left. You could give him a couple of games just to get some of the MLB jitters dealt with. Teams do that all the time obviously.

The biggest problem with the callups is when a team out of contention throws a AAA lineup out there against a team in a tight playoff race. It happens every year and drives people nuts. I agree with Hurl, reducing the number allowed would be good.

That's one problem, the other is teams that add a gaggle of relievers and constantly match lefty righty for the last 3 innings of every game (looking at you Girardi).

 

The thing that most hate about it... They play the first 5 months of the season with 25 players, why do they get to use way more just for the last month ? It's like playing game with different rules in the same season.
