Bunchedundies Verified Member Posted May 24, 2014 Author Posted May 24, 2014 I think Stephen Phillips is a tool, much like you. LOL, you mad? Sounds like your typical post, zero insight, keyboard warrior, keep up the good fight man.
shortstop Verified Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 IMO wait & see is the way to go - pitchers will become available & the price based on supply may come down... Where this franchise is, trading for a true #1 isn't likely to happen - IMO, if they can get a solid innings eater that can give u a shot to win/get to the 7th, that's the guy you're looking for without giving up main assets ie Sanchez and stroman... To go all in & trading away remaining assets that are close to the majors & make a contribution will likely set this franchise back moving forward...
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Would Cliff Lee be a better pick up then Shark?
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Would Cliff Lee be a better pick up then Shark? Depends on the price i guess. We would need Rogers to commit $ not only to this years budget but also next.
shortstop Verified Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Don't see Lee a fit $$ wise & where he'd want to play...and while another available pitcher might not be Lee, could provide similar results...
StevieRay Verified Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 imo, they will never trade Sanchez. He can be the only saving grace even he busts because of the mets+dickey trades. The ramification of him reaching his potential in another organization outweighs the effect of him fizzling out as a Jay. Stroman, on the other hand, I m all for trading. Still not a believer in that height.

Cliff Lee is elite. I don't think there's many available pitchers who could come here and put up similar results. As you said...the $$ would be the hardest part. I wonder if they would take on Ricky's contract in order to get a better prospect package. Probably not....
TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 If the Jays trade for a starter, and give up 2 or more of their top prospects (Stro/Sanchez/Norris/Tirado/Nay...) I'd like to see them go back to the mentality of acquiring young major league, yet controllable guys, not 30ish, verge of free agency or rental types. If you go back and listen to AA interviews, and Rogers talking heads pre Nov 2012, that was the script before The Trade and The Dickey Deal. We had stockpiled all these prospects, and if we traded them, it would be for guys who were young stars, yet still in their early arb years, so even if we werent in WIN NOW Mode, these guys would be in their primes when we were. The perfect guy for that script wouldve been Latos, when SD was shopping him after 2011. Legend has it that AA wouldnt include Syndergaard OR D'Arnaud, so the deal didnt get done. Then 1 year later, he includes Syndergaard AND D'Arnaud for Dickey. Totally flipped the script. I'd prefer we target guys like Dallas Keuchel, Tyson Ross, Tom Koehler, Johnathan Niese, etc. who are under control for at least 2-3 more years after this one, are either very cheap, or relatively cheap (Niese has an extension, but still tops out at like 9 mil in 2016). Sure guys like this will be hard to acquire, as they are young and controllable, and fit with a rebuilding team mentality...but Samardjiza will also be hard to acquire. When we're talking high end prospects, I'd like to get a guy who can be controllable for the next few seasons, not just the rest of this year and next.
vic city Verified Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 I don't like this we have to get the Shark mentality...is he really the only choice out there? perhaps some tunnel vision going on here...there will be others pitchers that will become available...key of course is how long, if the jays are still in the hunt, can the jays wait to add a consistent/reliable starter for a playoff push? I for one don't know much about Shark but would not give up one or both of Stroman or Sanchez...ergo, jays wouldn't get him...let some other club give up significant assets... there will be another pitcher available that would be able to contribute and pitch in meaningful games... as an aside, my question is - who needs a CF for a playoff push & what could the jays get in return for Rasmus? is there a playoff type team deep in starting pitching that needs a CF? Agree with everything you said. We need another front end SP to put us over the top but we can't give up our top 2 prospects. I know you can't predict a prospects future but Stroman and Sanchez are the best pitching prospects we've had (and not traded away) in years. Let's develop these guys!! There's going to be other SP available where we won't have to mortgage our future entirely. In the end, if we have to trade one of them so be it. I don't think I could choose though...I'd probably just flip a coin.
vic city Verified Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 On the other hand, I feel like the rest of the AL East will go on a shopping spree if they miss the postseason, while we'll probably just blow our team up and miss the postseason at least a few more years. I'm so torn!! I became a Jays fan right after they went back to back, I was 8 years old then so I didn't really know what was going on but I've never experienced postseason baseball as a fan. The amount of DAYS I've spent watching Jays games is pathetic lol....especially since the PVR was invented! We deserve postseason baseball!
BarkatToronto Verified Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 The name Jon Niese has been brought up. To be honest, I cant think of a better fit. Also controllable till 2017 I would agree to trading major prospects for such a name
BarkatToronto Verified Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Lets go for it ... Stroman and Gose for Niese Get it done AA
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Stroman and Gose for Niese Get it done AA Oh god no
BarkatToronto Verified Member Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Oh god no I honestly dont know what people see in Stroman. He is short, I cant see him consistently getting the range of action that will be required to pitch 6-7 innings and get MLB hitters out. He is suited for the bullpen, so essentially we are talking about a reliever and a possible pinch runner for a mid rotation rotation to above average starter
