scottishbluejay Verified Member Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 I'll condense this to one post as it is effectively a "newb" question so I don't want to create too many threads asking fairly obvious questions. Colby Rasmus: I see he's out with a hopeful return for early June. Anyone got any more detail on a return? What is the general consensus on Colby Rasmus? How do you rate him as a player and how do you project his play this season? I'm considering picking him up in my fantasy league. I'm in need of outfielders and currently looking at dropping Jimmy Rollins for him. I've a personal attachment to Jimmy Rollins as I used to live in Philly and my only piece of baseball Merch I've ever bought is a Jimmy Rollins Baseball shirt. But in desperate need for some outfielders and I've already Jose Reyes and Hanley Ramirez ahead of Jimmy at SS. Hoping to buy so Jays gear soon. Third base: A lot has been made about moving Lawrie to 2nd to accommodate Francisco at 3rd. What makes a good 3rd baseman opposed to a 2nd baseman? I'm led to believe that Lawrie is a quality 3rd but not as productive at 2nd, why is this? Why is Francisco weaker and why can't Francisco play second? How do the roles and responsibilities differ between 2nd and 3rd?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 Rasmus, take it easy, slow down, we don't need you right now!!

Colby 2012 awful and Colby 2013 one of top 3 CF in AL IMO ending with .840 OPS, relatively cheap compared to guys like Jones/Upton and solid BAPIP numbers. Steady D. Colby 2014 who knows? He has 9 dingers and an ever alarming K rate and hurt. A great 3rd basemen is all about reaction time - arm and quickness. 2 requires more lateral movement. Lawrie could be great at 3rd and + at 2nd in my opinion over time.

Francisco no. At 2b one needs to be athletic enough to turn the double play with a runner coming in... Lawrie... not sure if he's there. That's one that requires reps... not just natural range. Lawrie has the tools for 2b... Francisco does not. 3b - you can get by with good reactions and a good arm. Do not need as much range. Though it is awesome when a third basemen has range and athleticism. So obviously you saw the double play Lawrie made last night. That should show why Lawrie has the talent to play 2b. Good range and athleticism. Could handle the footwork needed at second. Best place for Lawrie is to continue being a super utility. 2nd and 3rd. Short even occasionally. All depends what other pieces are in action. The only Cavaet is whether Lawrie can mentally handle this. Maybe his ADD and aggressive ways are to much for him to handle multiple positions.
Governator Community Moderator Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 Rasmus' problem in fantasy leagues is he is about as streaky as they come. He'll look like a rookie call up at the plate one month and the hottest hitting player in the league the next. After a DL stint I'm not sure what guy will show up, he was on an 8 or 10 game hit streak I think before that series with the Angels with 4 or 5 dingers in that time.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 A "newb question" thread isn't a bad idea, really. Agree. As a newbie I don't even know how to make a thread. Maybe that isn't a bad thing?!

At the start of the year i had him on the bench when he was s***ing the bed but as soon as he starts to heat up you can get great production out of him for about a week to a month.
scottishbluejay Verified Member Posted May 21, 2014 Author Posted May 21, 2014 Yeah sorry, I'm conscious of making glaringly obvious question posts on a forum mainly used by guys who have in depth knowledge. Thanks for the explanation though. I'd actually be using Colby Rasmus off the Bench so he wouldn't be playing every day. I just need some depth in the OF as I currently only have Ben Revere on the bench who isn't playing every game and isn't really playing amazingly. Stole a few bases though! Currently have Melky, Victorino, Wil Myers outfield. Think Colby would be a good bench guy for me?

Like another poster suggested, sit him until he gets hot, then start him every game until he goes 0/* 2 or 3 games straight, then wait for him to get hot again. If you have a bench spot available for that sort of player, then he will be able to go through periods where you can get a lot out of him. Damn the Yanks just beat the cubs :/.

People coming here to learn and who have questions and stuff, we're usually alright with. I think anyway...
