It's pretty damn important to get swings and misses, allowing contact leads to bad luck, unless you can successfully induce many groundballs.

Because HR BB and K all tell you a lot about what the pitcher did in one game. Way more so than runs scored/ERA.

You can't always control weak contact, and it's far safer to K a guy in terms of them not reaching base (assuming the catcher might f*** up) than to allow a groundball or bloop which might drop in.
