Convo Verified Member Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 What is there to judge? By his own admission he doesn't have the stamina. Shouldn't that be case closed? Means he wasn't properly stretched out. Means he hasn't pitched as a starter in 5-6 years. How can stamina issues be anything but normal at this point?
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Means he wasn't properly stretched out. Means he hasn't pitched as a starter in 5-6 years. KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 McGowan needs to be a reliever. But Happ doesn't deserve to be his replacement. And everyone already knows he will be the guy they go to. This Jays made their bed when they committed to him in the off-season and then committed to him again as a starter again when they put him on the DL. From the get go, they should have never told him that he was nothing more than one of many rotation candidates and that he would have to earn his way to the rotation. It's important to remember that all of Happ's gripes are just him reminding the Jays of the public commitments they have made to him.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Making public commitments to players is dumn
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Nolin or Stroman had better f***ing start some time in the next week. Will not happen
Convo Verified Member Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Sure it's normal but what difference does that make? What can you do to fix it? Pretty much nothing at this point. I feel like the fatigue may subside to some extent as he continues to stretch out and adjust to the higher pitch count...
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Redmond if they don't wanna start the clock on Stroman yet or don't think Nolin is ready. McGowan is way too mediocre. Redmond can get the jays in the 6th inning
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 I feel like the fatigue may subside to some extent as he continues to stretch out and adjust to the higher pitch count... I guess there lies the dillema. You can stretch him out in the minors so you either have to continue doing it at the Major League level or you cut your losses and move him to the bullpen. I'd rather just do the later myself. I think he has the potential to thrive there. This whole McGowan as a starter thing is a bit of a Hail Mary. The team has some more realistic alternatives for the rotation.

BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 I really wanted him to succeed. He had that one really good start. This is upsetting, but yeah, if he tires after 60 pitches *and* the opposition is batting like .400 off of him the third time around it's time for the 'pen. He'd be great after Dickey is pulled in the 4th or 5th. I guess Happ for now, hopefully Sanchez after June 1st.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Mike Minor was the one who lost his manhood. Here in Dominican, if you're a man and lose your penis, you buy a wig, paint your nails and learn to pee squatting......It's all about earn money. we really don't care what happens in your third world country
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Other then buehrle no buddy has been lights out so far! Would need someone like JFaS to crunch the numbers against his peers from the al east! Is he really under performing by that much to say other 4 game starters ? Take a look at odorizzi, nova, buchholz, and Jimenez who some here wanted! He also got started late in spring stretching out to be the starter is that also adding to it? That and have walker tell him to stfu and throw what Navarro tells you and just throw what he calls the best you can, focus on pitching!
TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Shockingly an 8 man bullpen has not been enough for this team. Terrible. I see McGowan getting at least 1, but probably more starts...at least to get to the Super2 cutoff with Stroman. If he absolutely cannot go, then they'll go with Redmond in the rotation. Its standard Beeston/AA modus opererandi.
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 I'd keep running him out there. He's so close to figuring it all out. The velocity is there, the secondary pitch quality is there, the command is often there for at least 3 or 4 innings. He wasn't gonna come back from the dead and immediately turn into a refined MLB #3 SP, guys. Think of him like a prospect.
BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Sanchez is rocking an 8/5 K/BB through five starts in AA, which is pretty much in line with what he's done over the last two years. He shouldn't even be in the discussion for a major league spot at this point. I love his stuff. I think Stroman will be a bust.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2014 Author Posted April 24, 2014 Wow Ang, never seen you so serious before. No favors, I just think we can see more from McG. I would like to see a few more starts, personally. How can you judge a guy off 4 starts after not starting for 5-6 years and not really having a full spring? I played baseball for a long time; from experience I can tell you that McGowan doesn't have the stamina to start games. This is just the start of this season and he's out of gas after 50 pitches by game. Morrow is a similar case but less drastic. Morrow has shown he can touch 98 mph but he works in the low 90's to reach at least the 5th inning. We need a 10-man bullpen

NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 I'd be interested to know what McGowan's TIPS and xxFIP are after yesterday's outing.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 I think the issue here is that they told McGowan to start throwing 80+ pitches from his first start onwards. They should have realized that he wasn't completely stretched out yet and went slower with him, even if it meant having a tandem #5 starter for a few weeks while McGowan's pitch count slowly increases. Instead, he's been asked to throw 90 pitches right out of the gate as if he had a full Spring and hasn't been MIA for nearly six years. A desperation move that predictably backfired. I think you have to start Happ at this point, whether you like him or not. Don't start the service clock on Stroman or Nolin yet, as I imagine if/when a blow-up happens after this season, we will need them for six years as cheap labor.
The_DH Verified Member Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 The stuff is still there but he probably needed a longer spring than anyone else.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 To say plainly that McG is 'mediocre' after 4 starts is revealing the idiocy of our fan base. How is it idiotic to say he's been mediocre after 4 starts when he's been worse then that?
The_DH Verified Member Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 His results have been mediocre but he probably needs to do a dozen starts of 3 or so innings and then go.

Morrow has shown he can touch 98 mph but he works in the low 90's to reach at least the 5th inning. We need a 10-man bullpen Since we're stuck with an 8-man bullpen for a while, why not unofficially piggyback the #5 slot - Happ/McGowan would be a good combo, ~3 innings each. You bring Happ in the 3rd or 4th when you have a couple of lefties up, saving McG the velocity drop and going (hopefully) through the order a 3rd time...
BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Not going to happen. Redmond.....MAYBE Rogers........MAYBE Happ..........PROBABLY I honestly expect one of the young bucks to be starting by June. Someone will have to be DFA'ed.
BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Expand on this, please.. I dunno, I just think he'll be middling and not find a role until he's like 30, and then be a fantastic closer. Just a hunch. Of course I hope he wins a Cy Young as a starter.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 (edited) Just is it fair to call McGowan to the mat on performance? When the starters as whole are under achieving as a unit. Buehrle you may be excused from this discussion as the exception to all of this! No buddy is recording the min. 18 outs per game as of yet. Dicky is close, but. Based on expectations did any one really see McGowan out performing the others on this staff? We really are only asking him to be better then ja Happ and Ricky Romero and really he still might be! Think of it and sorry if this upsets you or scares a few. But right now morrow is only 2 outs per game better, hutch is just barely 3 outs better. As for dickey he is better by only 4.65 outs per game, ace my ass! And if you dig down deeper runs per out dickey sits at .2183 per out and McGowan at .2549 not that great of a difference as of yet. Who really needs a kick in the ass to get going, looking right at you dick! What we all hope for is pitchers who can give us six innings and then to the pen! I for one hope we get there. One of the stats or number crunchers can double check my math, please ! But let's assume 18 outs is needed and we get it. Hutch would be at 2.399, morrow at 3.355, McGowan at 4.588 and dickey at 3.929 runs against per 6 innings or 18 outs! Oh yeah and Go Jays Go ! f*** you Yankees! jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 I expect changes soon. Nolin and Stroman are tearing up Buffalo right now, with Nolin the favourite for a callup (1.08 WHIP, 2.70 ERA, 21/7 K/BB ratio). Stroman still needs a little more polish, due to his walks.
