Havent researched this in awhile but, i understood that the reason spitballs were ultimately banned is because pitchers would combine the spit with dirt from the mound to make a mudball which again, ultimately lead to the death of Ray Chapman http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Chapman
