HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/story/?id=449480 "It's not necessarily what I prepared to do but if the phone rings and it's me I'm going to try and get guys out and take it from there," said Happ. "Other than that, I don't have a lot to say about the bullpen role." "I see myself as a starter," said Happ. "I don't think that's any secret. I want to be a starter in the major leagues. That's that."
flafson Verified Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 The only thing he said was that the Jays know what he thinks about the bullpen. But really, nothing wrong there, the guy wants to start games and know there is no room so he's going to be in the pen until then.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 If he pitches well, either the Jays will have a need or another team will trade for him...I hope.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 J.A. Happ lhp 1 year/$5.4M (2014), plus 2015 $6.7M club option He should be happy as hell about the bullpen...if he's effective there the F.O. will probably be stupid enough to pick up the option. Whereas he has little chance of putting up a good enough numbers for an ERA driven F.O. as a starter.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 It's retarded the entitlement he thinks he has, seriously man, someone needs to tell him he's s***. Let's face it, it doesn't help when the team says he's a big part of what they're trying to do.
Flamingweazel Verified Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I hate whiney athletes, getting paid millions to pitch in the bullpen boo hoo.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 WAT?!?! He's their 5th swingman? I'm referring to what the team said early in ST when they said "he's a big part of what we're trying to do here" or something to that effect. That doesn't help a guy realize he's s*** is all I'm saying.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 It's retarded the entitlement he thinks he has, seriously man, someone needs to tell him he's s***. Gotta heckle Happ at the next home game behind the bullpen.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Honestly though what pitcher probably about to enter free agency wouldn't want to start or close. Long men don't get paid (unless it's in the porn industry). He has to put up Drew Smyly type numbers to get a good contract as a middle reliever...and if he's doing that he'll probably be cracking our rotation anyway. Whereas he can probably get a small 2 or 3 year deal if he manages to put up a 4.25 ERA over 140 innings.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Don't take what this team says literally haha. LOL, I don't, but I can see Happ using that as them promising him a starting gig.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Nothing wrong with what he said in this article but this guy has been a notorious cry baby the last few years. He should be thankful he's still in the big leagues.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I believe in the same, I hope he crashes and burns.............sorry!!!! He's extremely hittable. His splits against LH aren't even all that great for his career either. Not sure how he succeeds in the pen. Redmond already seems to have the long relief role locked up and Gibby loves Rogers as his mop up man.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 He is a cancer ! Remove him at all cost. The 4.9 would be a wise investment for this team moving forward!
shortstop Verified Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 well, what he said is the truth, if he's called, he'll come in & try to get guys out...everyone understands he wants to be a starter... but I don't like the negativity and his me first attitude...as a comparison, Rogers is inconsistent but he states flat out he'll do whatever the coach/team wants him to do & he'll do the best he can... different situations b/w the two...Rogers was just happy to make the team & stay in the big leagues...but the words negativity and entitlement definitely come to my mind when it comes to Happ...

He should be thankful he's still in the big leagues. Nothing wrong with thinking it, but it doesn't accomplish much to say it to the media. I think Happ should stick with discussing his role internally and limit himself to canned do-whatever-they-ask-of-me type responses to the public.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Still hope AA would explore a Happ for Scutaro deal ! A expensive but nice bench player! Veterin ! Not sure we would have to give up more maybe Wagner or Jenkins ? Even Rogers should have enough to add under 1.5 million to the pay roll !
admin Site Manager Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 JA Happ sucks. Guys like him are a dime a dozen. I don't know why AA would give him another contract in the first place. Jenkins could easily do what Happ is doing.
shortstop Verified Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 no way imo jays give him another contract...he's either traded this season or that's it...
Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 All this punk has done since he got here is pitch like s*** and complain.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Not sure what you mean by that ? But San Fran wins big on the money side if AA could make this deal! And it benefits both if done straight up!
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 "1 year/$5.4M (2014), plus 2015 $6.7M club option" No way in hell the Jays pick up his option. He isn't worth $6.5 million We've lost enough prospects/cash on this guy already.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 "1 year/$5.4M (2014), plus 2015 $6.7M club option" No way in hell the Jays pick up his option. He isn't worth $6.5 million We've lost enough prospects/cash on this guy already. fwar says he is but bwar disagrees. So if they were to meet in the middle, he still worth the money. Someone who has a better understanding of how Fangraphs calculates their war needs to explain to me how a guy who pitched 92.2 innings, strikes out 7.5 per 9, walks 4.3 per 9 and gives up 0.97 hr/9 (bascially 1 homerun per 9) comes up to 1.2 war for the year. Very replacement level
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 It's directly from park adjusted FIP. so is park adjusted FIP a better stat then ERA+ or ERA-?
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Amazing. If he had just said something along the lines of: "I want to be a starter, but I realize there's 5 guys right now doing a good job so I will do my best to earn my way into the rotation" it would have made a world of difference on how people portray his attitude and got essentially the same point across.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 And I'm not thrilled that Happ is terrible yet still being paid like a useful player on a major league team. We can't always get what we want.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Happ should be thrilled he's not in the minors ffs.
