Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 After signing a minor league deal in the 2012-13 offseason, Blue Jays right-hander Neil Wagner earned the pro-rated portion that deal's $525K salary while in the Majors last season. However, Toronto's pre-arbitration pay scale called for just a $506,250 salary in 2014, as it is based on service time rather than performance. Agent Jim Munsey and Wagner refused the deal, giving Toronto the freedom to renew Wagner's contract at $500K if they wished, which the team did. Said Munsey of the ordeal: "It's, obviously, disappointing that they cut Neil's pay after such a good season last year. And when we didn't agree to the pay cut, they cut it further in renewing him. Hard to cheer for that. ... The rules allow the Jays to reduce his pay. They also allow us to talk about that at arbitration."
baseballsss Verified Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Wagners agents a retard. It's his fault wagners pay got cut the second time. Most teams in the majors base it off service time and not performace(it might of actually been the other way around) but this isn't the jays fault. He gets what he gets. Have a few good season then you'll get paid.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 I don't even know why agents whine about this. A team's payscale is something they just don't like setting the precedent of breaking. Get to arb and then you can have a say. some of the agents are seeing guys like Puig and Cespedes come into the league with zero service time and get big time money and they are trying to get some of that kind of action.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 When you're a replacement level reliever, you should be thankful just to be in the majors making league minimum. Wagner hasn't done anything to warrant getting paid more than the minimum the Jays are obligated to pay. He could be gone tomorrow and I'd honesty never notice.
Brenner Verified Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Mike Trout made $510,000 last year. Hate the system not the Jays.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 He's definitely not a replacement reliever. ZiPS ROS has Wagner at a 4.00 FIP, 0.2 WAR. That's pretty indistinguishable from a replacement reliever.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Tell Wagner he can have half of Happ's salary if he breaks Happ's leg and makes it look like an accident.

Brenner Verified Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 IMO Wagner isn't even that good. The way he's developed the last couple years he could be a setup man on some teams right now. On this team he is probably #6 on the depth chart and in that role he would be excellent. He'd be great for games where we are trailing in the 7th/8th by a run or two and don't want to burn up Delebar/Santos/Jansen.

He's a somewhat decent bullpen arm. Sure, he could be a SU man, in a very poor bullpen...
8D Verified Member Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 He's definitely not a replacement reliever. I agree. I can very well see him as a dependable middle-late inning reliver. Doesn't allow too many hits or walks and strikes out quite a bit. Solid RP.
HASHTAGYOLOSWAG Verified Member Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 Neil is one of my favourite bullpen arms. Everytime I seem to watch he is lockdown.

For a team on a tight budget (like the Jays are apparently) you need these type of players.
