Jays: Dustin McGowan takes the mound in his first Home Opener of his career. He missed the 2008 season because of a surgery to repair the fraying of the labrum in his shoulder and was expected to return May of 2009. He then missed that deadline and the rest of the year because of knee surgery to repair articular cartilage damage. His expected return was June of 2010 but he was experiencing soreness and pain in his shoulder, only to find that he had a torn rotator cuff which was his season ending surgery for the year of 2010. He eventually started pain-free throwing and got the call in September of 2011 and made his first appearance in over 3 years, against the Boston Red Sox. He pitched 4 innings, and gave up 3 runs while striking out 5 and walking 3. He ended the season with 4 starts posting a 8.57 K/9 and 5.57 BB/9 ratio along with a 6.43 ERA, but it was a great first step onto his path to recovery. He missed most of the 2012 season with Plantar Fasciitis in his foot obtained during Spring Training, and during his comeback in August of 2012 he underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery on August 9th. He came back June of 2013 and a much improved ratio of 9.12 K/9 and 4.21 BB/9 along with a 2.45 ERA in 25.2 relief innings. He pitched great in Spring Training and hopefully he does well and stays injury free. The Blue Jays homered in their first three games to start the season, their longest such streak since 2011, when they hit homers in five straight games. Seven of Toronto's 11 runs during their four-game series against the Rays were scored via the home run. Toronto went 4 for 29 (.138) with runners in scoring position and totaled 11 runs in the series. The Blue Jays had not allowed a home run in each of their first three games of the season, which was the third-longest streak to start a season in franchise history. The only two longer streaks were in 1989 and 1999, when Toronto went five games to start the year. Yankees: Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter enters play on Thursday with 3,318 career hits, good for ninth place on baseball's all-time list. He needs one hit to tie Paul Molitor (3,319) for eighth place on the all-time list, and fourth place on the American League all-time hits list. The Yankees have three Japan-born players on their active roster in Tanaka, Hiroki Kuroda and Ichiro Suzuki. They have had four other Japan-born players in their history: Hideki Irabu (1997-99), Hideki Matsui (2003-09), Kei Igawa (2007-08) and Ryota Igarashi (2012). Yankees infielder Yangervis Solarte, who was 3-for-3 with a walk, double, RBI and two runs scored in his first Major League start on Thursday, is the first Yankee to have at least three hits and an RBI in one of his first two career games since Oscar Azocar in 1990. HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 I know he's the enemy, but I'm really excited to see Tanaka.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 I know he's the enemy, but I'm really excited to see Tanaka. Oh, me too!
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Disappointed that Halladay isn't wearing his old jersey. But then again, there are probably MLB rules against that. Would be nice if he came to the mound with his pitching wind-up too, rather than a lazy lob to homeplate.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 lol I see what you're doing here Mr. Moderator. I won't fall for your stupid party tricks!

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Damn Tanaka's spring numbers look terrifying. Yeah, and we have some swing and miss hitters too, even if they are improved this year. He's probably going to rack up the K's.

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 I'm curious to why Izturis is not in the lineup? he's been on fire and Goins might as well be swinging an A cup bra at home plate.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Listening to the pre game show, drinking Rum ! f*** this is gonna be exciting! Ok Bluejays, let's ... Let's play ball ! Get "R" Done Dusty !

I was kind of wondering the same thing. I think its a combination of management saying to Goins "you're our guy" and giving McGowan as much support as possible.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Streaks are just random variation. Just because he's hit so far doesn't mean he'll stay "hot". We have three replacement level options, doesn't matter which play. C'mon bro seriously? He's seeing the ball well right now, that's not a random variation, its a human element.

Izturis is on a roll, need to ride it as long as you can. you never know when it will end and it may never come back. He's been the biggest surprise so far and then Lind's great start.
ColdPint Verified Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Wow, Barry Davis just posted a photo of Doc on twitter, in the media scrum before the game, and he looks REALLY thin. Doesn't look like Doc. Hope the health issues he retired for aren't serious.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Really good interview with Gibby on FAN590 now
GD Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 10 year old getting interview on TV: "Arencibia [...] cost us runs." 10 year old confirmed to know more about baseball than Anthopoulos. It might have been me
Caper Verified Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Gordie was just on tv... Trashing JPA!
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Note to self: stay away from this GDT come game time lol. I'm just saying.. The random variation is that Izturis is one of the three replacement players that is seeing the ball well at the moment. Understandably, these moments can come and go on a dime, but the hot player should be ridden until then. I think management wants Goins at second as much as possible and Izturis can't play short. Izturis may pinch hit for Diaz at some point.

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Note to self: stay away from this GDT come game time lol. that would work for most of us.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 I'm certainly hoping for a well-earned win, last year's opener was so anti-climatic and was a sign of bad things to come.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 I'm pumped for this game, more so that the season opener since I missed like half of it.
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
