Brian Tallet.

 

He had a few good seasons as the long man, and I remember him spot starting and throwing 5-6 innings at one time.

 

But all of a sudden he s*** the bed.

 

Every single time he came out of the bullpen, he was guaranteed to give up a walk or a run. It was terrible.

 

It didn't help that he had his own peculiarities, like high scocks, stirrups and a terrible, audible grunt despite not throwing hard at all.

 

You can sort of deal with that type of s*** if you're a pretty good player. But when you're s***, and you scream attention, then by god you are as annoying as f***.

Nobody mentioned Jo-Jo Reyes, for me there's no doubt.

 

Jo Jo Reyes for sure. The Jays gave him 20 starts that season and AA was doing everything in his power to keep him on the roster after spring training I remember because he believed he would have been able to net something in a trade. What a waste.

Mother f***er blew almost every meaningful save we had. Especially hurtful during our push in gaining respect around the league early on in the '83 season. f***er.

Fun times. Nothing beat those weekday night games at the Ex. By the fifth inning, all the drunks were sitting above our dugout drilling the f*** out of players if they f***ed up. I remember Dave Collins almost jumping in to the stands if it weren't for someone pulling him back into the dugout. You don't see s*** like that anymore. Those were the best times.

Remember Ken Dayley. The Jays hadn't signed a free agent in years, and then Gillick decided to splurge on Ken Dayley on a 3-year deal I think. Then he got vertigo and never pitched for the Jays again.

I ended up hating Jose Silva as well. Top 10 prospect that I was sure would be the next Fernando Valenzuela. We ended up dealing him, Craig Wilson and another top 100 pitcher Jose Pett for one of my least favourite Jays position players Carlos Garcia (yeah yeah Merced was okay and in the deal)

Danny Darwin...what a piece of crap...although not sure you can put the blame on a guy who got signed as a washed up has been who wasn't all that great to begin with.

 

Tallet was badly misused

 

Towers was a great pickup for nothing that was mostly effective for 2.5 years. People remember 2005 but if you remember 2004 there was a stretch where he was the ONLY starting pitcher who was getting wins. It's just too bad the team ruined 2006 by putting him out there when he didn't have it anymore. 5 starts should have been enough before dumping him in the minors.

For me it has to be Josh Towers.

 

It was unexplainable how he performed as good as he did the first couple of years as a Jay, but even then it was his W-L record that made him look good as much as anything else. His fastball was impossibly straight and got sent over the skydome fences with regularity. There were many games during that 2006 season where he might as well have just turned around and thrown the ball in the gap instead of wasting the added step of having the batter hit it there.

 

Honourable mention to Brian Tallet too. He was awful.

 

Any names that stand out to others over the years?

 

Hanson or Woody Williams. Were they ever ripped in the call-in shows back in the day

I also found B.J. the most frustrating, he had the one dominate year but after that he was very hard to watch even though somehow he managed to get the job done more often than not.

Jeremy Accardo. He strikes out Barry Bonds and suddenly he thinks he's Mariano Rivera.

Erik Hanson. Couldn't stand the beta look he gave off, and sore neck (from sitting at the Skydome) every time he pitched. The sound of the ball off the bat still causes pain, and the body & shoulder slump was priceless.

OP was asking for pitchers, but I bet if it was a position player, Rios and Wells would likely be in the top 5 on the majority of lists, deservedly or not.

 

For pitcher's, I really hated Chris Carpenter. He stunk every year he pitched for the Jays, then after surgery and was released, became a perennial Cy Young candidate out of nowhere.

4 WAR in 2005 and had the highest IP total that season. Also, he had the stretch of like 14 or 16 straight quality starts I believe. He was huge for the Jays that season especially with Doc getting injured and Lilly sucking. Towers was fun to watch and he had impeccable control. He worked fast, hardly walked anybody and was someone that was easy to root for.

 

Also, he was the only Jays pitcher that had the balls to beam A-Rod. Yes it was with an 88mph fastball but who cares. He actually went out there and stood up for his team, which definitely probably demanded a ton of respect from players in the clubhouse.

 

Not arguing the facts you present at all. I just really didn't like him for some reason.

These guys know they don't have a lot of talent, don't get paid a lot, but they come out and give it everything they have to try and help the team.

Sadly, those were the best pitchers we had available after being hit by injury. Why do you blame them?

 

My pick is Ted Lilly.

The Jays build up an 8-0 lead after two innings. Lilly precedes to surrender seven runs in the third inning, and then has a tantrum because Gibbons wants to remove him from the game.

He felt he was entitled to continue, because he remained in line for the win. He didn't care that he was single-handedly blowing an 8 run lead.
