jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 Unsurprisingly, the Jays optioned Kyle Drabek, Sean Nolin and Chad Jenkins to Buffalo (AAA). Pretty much means Hutchison's going to make the team out of spring training. Still uncertain is the 5th spot in the rotation between Stroman, Redmond, Rogers, Happ and Romero.
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 What a great crop of arms fighting for that 5th spot.......
Caper Verified Member Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 I would just give it to DMac and let his arm explode.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 What a great crop of arms fighting for that 5th spot....... fighting for the number 4 position! Morrow is the new number 5!
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 Drabek and Nolin have looked terrible. Jenkins looks like a guy who could at least chew some innings. I'm surprised Stroman is in still in the hunt. The Jays must really like the idea of him starting the home opener.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 fighting for the number 4 position! Morrow is the new number 5! So Morrow if for sure starting the home opener?
kgm1 Verified Member Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 fighting for the number 4 position! Morrow is the new number 5! This team needs Morrow to grab the two spot . He has to be the top of rotation guy that the stuff indicates . Early enough yet that he can progress to that point . I still expect Happ to be in the 5 slot to spit up the lefties however it now comes down to best team and the back injury has set him back . Bonus is he has options . Last couple of weeks are going to be very interesting as to who wins spots , who is DFAd and who winds up at AAA .
The_DH Verified Member Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 Looks more like Happ starts on the DL. He doesn't have any innings yet.

He already pitched in a minor game, i don't think the FO thinks he can't make it. Unless of course they will torch him again for lots of runs in a short period of time.

That is WAY too much pressure to put on the guy for his FIRST mlb start against the powerhouse yankee lineup. Just a really bad idea and I hope it doesn't happen.

I think Happ is out of options, but at his salary, I doubt many teams would consider picking him up. I also think he can refuse to be sent down and become a FA. I think we need to remember that Morrow made like 10 starts last year and hasn't pitched since. I'm fine with him getting extra work in ST before the season starts and having him start the HO should give him a bit more work. They probably also want him to start the HO instead of Happ or whoever is the #5.

Remember when the Jays refused to start Lawrie at home. Sounds like another piece of strategery Alex use to follow, may have bitten the dust.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 O.K. but it's still a bad idea. Starting Romero in it would also be a bad idea. Stroman is not coming north with the team, that's just not happening. I don't mind that he's still in camp as he's getting some work in against some ML talent although maybe it would be better if he was sent down and started every 5th day like he will in the regular season. I expect Happ to be #5 or one of Rogers/Redmond/McGowan if he starts the season on the DL.

He was slated to start last season in the minors before they swapped him out for Romero. He played in the minors later in the season but that was a rehab assignment and they may not have kept him longer than the designated rehab time so he may not have burned the option the Jays were planning to use last year.

I expect Happ to be #5 or one of Rogers/Redmond/McGowan if he starts the season on the DL. It'll be between Redmond and Rogers, whomever posts a less than 7.00 ERA in ST. McGowan and the loser will be the long men. We will go with an 8-man bullpen for a week or two, and then try to slide those loser of the Redmond/Rogers battle back down to AAA without a claim. RR will start the season in the minors for a few weeks, but will be called up if (a) even semi-effective when either Rogers or Redmond sucks ass, or ( when Morrow gets hurt by early May. My personal rotation is Dickey, Hutchinson, MB, McGowan and Happ, but that won't happen. I had soooooo much hope for Rogers, I thought he would blow us away in ST. But he hasn't.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 I was wondering if he was 10 5 eligible. He isn't and JfaS I need you to explain to me how he can elect free agency if he refuses to be optioned down
Sparky12 Verified Member Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 I think I'm honestly hoping Romero keeps pitching well and grabs that spot, crazy never thought I'd say that
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 He isn't and JfaS I need you to explain to me how he can elect free agency if he refuses to be optioned down A player with at least 5 years of Major League service can't be demoted to the minor leagues on optional assignment without his consent. If he refuses the assignment the team has to offer him a release. At the start of this year Happ has 5 years and 47 days of service time.

I guess that's what's different between this year and last.
KSaw Verified Member Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 McGowan also has enough service time and being that his goal is to start, will accept assignment to start in Buffalo if he isn't ready to do so with Toronto by Opening Day. Redman is out of options but hasn't pitched well thus far.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted March 16, 2014 Author Posted March 16, 2014 McGowan is also out of options.

Jim_Ackers_balls Verified Member Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Romero needs to grab this spot. If not, hopefully they can trade Romero and get something in return.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Neither of these things are likely to happen. The only place Romero is going is to Buffalo unless the DL goes crazy . He needs to prove he has his walk rate down . He could do with a few more K,s too . I think he can do that and help this team down the road
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
