That was so painful last year. We were losing our minds, so was Happ, and then when they FINALLY announced it was going to be Happ then Ricky was pissed.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Some interesting things: 1) When talking about 2nd base depth, he kind of talks up Diaz and Getz more than Kawasaki. Might be more that they've surprised him though. 2) Sounds like he'll likely deal some out of options guys in the last few days of camp. 3) Neither Stroman or Hutch have any innings limits. Said Stroman threw 126 + 25 fall league + extended spring (probably another 25 to 30). 4) Says Jenkins has looked very good with increased velocity. 5) Apparently quite happy to get Dan Johnson (one of the FO guys has been pushing to get him for years).

Of course he was pissed but in reality he had no reason to be in the 25 man roster. Man couldn't (still can't?) hit a broad side of a fat chick.

I guess last year Ricky was his only competition. This year there are better alternatives.

Think part of that also had to do with most people being in totally justified denial that Alex made a "12-player trade" for a guy that wasn't about to make the team out of spring training, and then yes, mostly because Happ not making it = Romero making it.

I would have no problem for Happ making the team if he showed he could pitch the way he did at the beginning of last year. From what I recall, he was our best starter for the first few months of the season. Ideally though he would be a spot starter/swing man.

Did Jenkins go on that pitching program?
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Did Jenkins go on that pitching program? I think pretty much everyone did, but I'm not positive.

Problem with Happ (when he's healthy), his stuff is all straight and hitters have no problem fouling them off for hours. He then gets to the 4th inning with 80+ pitches and we're doomed. When he's not on his game, we don't even get that.

Happ didn't even get through 1-1/2 months before he got hit in the head... and he sucked... 4.91 ERA in 7 GS. After he came back from injury he sucked a little less... 4.37 ERA in 11 GS.

The real problem with Happ is his stuff sucks and he has to pitch outside of the zone to not get hammered... this leads to extra walks and high pitch counts early on. He's the type of pitcher who will give you 5 IP of sub-par pitching on an average start...

Convo Verified Member Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 let's use xfip here instead of era, but your point stands: 5.53 xfip (downright awful) before injury 4.44 xfip (still awful) after injury ok
The_DH Verified Member Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Geez, when I was in university why couldn't I get lobbed such easy questions.

The_DH Verified Member Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Yeah but I never got questions like "do you know your name?" or "can you spell it?" like our media throws AA.

The_DH Verified Member Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 So getting back to Jenkins, what's been up with him? I wrote him off a few years ago.
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 So getting back to Jenkins, what's been up with him? I wrote him off a few years ago. Just AA attempting to build up his non existent value. AAA lifer.

flafson Verified Member Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Syndergaard is looking like he'll turn out to be something useful. He wasn't a real first rounder though.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Syndergaard is looking like he'll turn out to be something useful. And Stroman

All he said was that he was our best starter (although it was only a month and a half). That's probably pretty accurate considering the others.
