I was thinking about booking a trip to watch a couple ST games. Has anyone else done this? I would really appreciate your advice.

Should I stay near the airport or near Dunedin? Any recommended hotels (cheap)?

Should a fly to Tampa first?

How do you get around if you don't have a car... bus or taxi?

Is the end of Feb a good time to watch ST games or is it very rudimentary so early in camp?

Went down a few years ago. We rented a car down there to get around, just made our life much easier. I would suggest going down mid march or later if you want to see more big league players. If you can try to catch games in other stadiums. I saw two home games and one road game in the Braves complex, was much nicer to be quite honest.

I went down to Dunedin last year, here are my quick thoughts :

Stadium

- Nothing special but you can get cheap tickets $20-$30 bucks. Go early and enjoy the fun, though the players weren't as available last year as they were in previous years

- Go early to get parking, very limited

- If you have the ability to pick, go to games later in the spring training schedule

Area / Hotel

- If I were you, I would stay in Clearwater. Dunedin is very small and books up very quick, not worth the trouble calling every hotel. Clearwater to Dunedin can be as quick as 15 minutes.

- Catch games at different venues, the Philly complex is waaaay better then the jays and is a great way to see a minor league complex the way it should be done.

- Fly into Tampa, easiest destination but you will need a car as far as I know

Experience

- Enjoy the culture of Sprint Training, went to Lenny's Breakfast Restaurant and its a lot of fun and is full of fans - a great breakfast too

- Check out the minor league complex for the Jays, though it looks like your average park you would see for local towns it is still a good thing to be apart of

That's more than I would have expected the cheap tickets to go for. I probably wouldn't go to more than one game at that cost.

Thanks rasmus35. I am trying to book the entire trip as cheap as possible (without staying in a total dump), which is why I want to avoid getting a car.

I think standing OF are 8-10 bucks, bring a blanket and a cooler, your good to go.

I am not sure where these standing seats are, down the line there are seats from the first row to the last and there is no room in the OF after the tall fences. If you can, wait it out a bit closer... I see $15 tickets at some of the Phillies games on Stub Hub (vs Jays), locals sell of tickets as well. There is definitely a few bucks you could save here.

Cost savings - take the time and call hotels near the stadium then you can just walk.

Suggestion - go early to games, you can see the players and its a different experience then what you would feel at the RC (lot more closer).

Rent a car. It shouldn't be much $$. Plus you get the convenience and freedom and avoid the hassles of taxis and buses.

I stayed in Clearwater a few years back. Decent hotel, nice pool enclosed in courtyard kinda like Melrose Place.

I was surprised to find OHL tickets at more than $20 a pop now.

Went down last year...would recommend going later in March as weather would be better...but I went for the last two weeks and it was pretty windy and cold.

Flew to Tampa and rented car (cheap) and stayed out in Clearwater Beach (good deals on hotwire) about 20 mins to Dunedin and other complexes and much better nightlife than Dunedin/airport; Phillies/Yankees ST sites are also close by.

Need to look at different spots for tickets if you want deals, depending on the game you can get them cheaper on stubhub or other aftermarket sites that the Jays Team site. (Lots of season tickets holders just trying to recoup a few bucks). Bought 5 premium seats for the last ST game at Dunedin for 8 bucks each. But depends on who is playing, lots of teams have loyal fans who travel around with the more popular teams (Yanks, Sox, Phillies, game tix will get scooped up fast)
