Absolutely... If the only thing he ever did was hit that homerun... he would still be a legend in TO.

Jays legend

Baseball legend really. I grew up hearing about Bill Mazeroski's ? homer. Thurman Munson.. Bobby Thompson.. you don't need to be a HOF to go down as a legend

Sadly there's tons of Jays fans that would take Carter over any other Jay to ever play for the team.

The guy was s***.

He was automatic for a ribbie with a man on 3rd and < 2 outs.

EDIT: Except with a man on 1st.

From Fangraphs:

Matt Klaassen started the Carter-Batista Awards (CBA) in 2009 to recognize those players whose offensive value is exaggerated by their RBI totals. Joe Carter‘s name is listed first because not only does he own the highest CBA score since 1990, he owns three of the top seven.

Season/Player RBI wRC CBA

1990 Joe Carter 115 65 1.77

2004 Tony Batista 110 66 1.67

1999 Richie Sexson 116 70 1.66

1997 Joe Carter 102 62 1.65

1993 Ruben Sierra 101 63 1.60

1992 George Bell 112 72 1.56

1994 Joe Carter 103 68 1.51

1996 Derek Bell 113 75 1.51

1990 was a hilarious year for Joe... slugged under .400 and knocked in 115 RBI

Other than Sexson every one of those players spent time with the Jays.

If you don't think Joe Carter is a Jays legend, something is the matter with you. The guy was a key player for both World Series, not to mention hit a walk off homerun you may have heard about.

I was just a kid when he was a Jay but behind Alomar and Stieb he was always my favorite, and the guy is a class act and phenomenal ambassador of the game and the franchise. Numbers aren't EVERYTHING.

He was about the 10th most valueable player on both of those teams, if that.

Alomar, White, Olerud, Winfield, Molitor, Lee, Fernandez, Guzman, Henke, Ward, Key, Hentgen, Morris all beat Joe in WAR in 1992 or 1993 (or both for many of them).

David Cone, Ricky Henderson, and Candy Maldanado and probably some others beat him in WAR/game.

Carter had 8 career WAR with Toronto. He is behind Yunel Escobar in career Toronto WAR. He is behind Damsco Garcia. He is behind Otto Velez. He is behind Greg Zaun.

He is the 34th greatest blue jay position player of all time despite having more playing then most of them. He is the 50th or so best player when including pitchers. He is behind Al Leiter.

When normalized for playing time he is probably not among the top 100 players ever to play for the Blue Jays.

Let me repeat. Joe Carter has less Toronto WAR then Greg Zaun.

That's not true at all. Rick Bosetti was s***...Carter was hugely over-rated and the Jays extended him long past his ability to produce just because of the championship seasons. He was a 9 win player in his first 3 years with the Jays and we won 2 championships. There are a lot of players in history that are better known and did a lot less.

Who would you say are players that are better known and did less?? Guys worse then Carter who are better known?

This is a pretty good summarry. Some guys seem to be overrated AND great. For example Ted Williams is about 120 WAR, but has 160 "rated WAR" (page explains how they did it).

Guys that are better known and did less?? Scanning the list I can't see any. (Throw out some names, I can be convinced)

Carter has 16 WAR and 41 "rated WAR". Once could argue Dante Bichette is more overrated... but I don't know. Is he as well known??
