When tanaka is 14-1 at the all star break and the leading cy young candidate a lot of posters are going to say, "see told you we should have signed him!"

 

So, if you were AA, and Rogers authorized anything, would you have beaten yanks offer. I'd say it would take at least 10 million overall extra to convince him Toronto over NY.

There is no way I make that deal for over almost 25M per year for a pitcher that is not MLB proven. Is he going to be a cy candidate this year. I would bet my left nut that he won't be. Will he be solid....probably. Still not worth the money.

Doesn't make sense at that money, would rather take my chances signing both Ubaldo and Garza. Might cost slightly more per year but would be shorter length and less risky (risk spread over 2 arms), with more upside and more IP.

I wonder how Darvish feels now that an inferior (but still good pitcher) gets a way better contract than him 2 years later. Then again, it was a result of a change in posting rules.

The results in hindsight don't change the validity of the opinion prior to them. No reason to backtrack. The Rangers took a huge risk and it paid off for them, but it was a lot of money to gamble and could easily have blown up in their faces. This gamble by the Yankees (on a pitcher most people feel is inferior to Darvish), is even bigger. If he puts up the higher end of the (reasonable) numbers people should expect, then he's probably being paid fairly. If he doesn't, that contract could almost be worse for them than the A-Rod one is now.

No. I agree. The opinion now is what counts.. I'm just saying it's not one of those things where its Ryan Howard or Pujols territory.. where its obviously god awful before the ink dries.

But I truly believe we will regret this signing. Contracts are going up, not down.

 

Maybe 2 years from now we will scoff at this amount - kind of like how we scoffed at contracts for guys like Werth or Jackson.
