SAAviour Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 When tanaka is 14-1 at the all star break and the leading cy young candidate a lot of posters are going to say, "see told you we should have signed him!" So, if you were AA, and Rogers authorized anything, would you have beaten yanks offer. I'd say it would take at least 10 million overall extra to convince him Toronto over NY. Vote and put your name on record. Which armchair GM would do this deal???
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Good poll. I'm just annoyed that the Dodgers and Cubs didn't beat it. Too rich for us.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 There is no way I make that deal for over almost 25M per year for a pitcher that is not MLB proven. Is he going to be a cy candidate this year. I would bet my left nut that he won't be. Will he be solid....probably. Still not worth the money.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Kind of an absurd question since the GM likely doesn't have that kind of money to spend in the first place.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 yeah i don't do that deal, if he opts out how much would that coast them like 120 over 4 years that's pretty ridiculous
Brenner Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Doesn't make sense at that money, would rather take my chances signing both Ubaldo and Garza. Might cost slightly more per year but would be shorter length and less risky (risk spread over 2 arms), with more upside and more IP.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 No way, he's unproven in MLB. The odds are less then 50/50 that he's successful in the show.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Absolutely 100% no.
Brenner Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Its not the right deal for the Jays though that doesn't mean it wont work out for the Yankees.
Davie Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Hell no. Id rather try and nab 2 of Jimenez/Garza/Santana and convince Drew to play 2B if that sort of money is available.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I voted no. $25 per year is a s*** ton of money. Only way I'd think about doing it is if it was a team option to opt out after year 4 instead of a player option.

Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I'm assuming "Rogers authorized anything" is just for Tanaka? If it did take an extra 10 million than no way...
kgm1 Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Yea , If you have Yankee/Dodger budgets but we don't and I doubt he signs with the Jays unless it is stupidly higher than anyone else . Darvish was the guy . Win the bid and he had to sign with us or go back to japan .
Convo Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Wow this board is a lot smarter than the old board, old board would of all voted 'yes'
SAAviour Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Author Posted January 22, 2014 Whatever it takes means Rogers told AA he can beat any offer by 10 mil if he thinks it's the right thing to do and he would still have about 15 mil to play with after.
TBJ12 Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Not a chance in hell I pay that kind of money for an unproven starter.
BlueJayWay Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 No I wouldn't have. I'm just annoyed that the Dodgers and Cubs didn't beat it. This.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I love that not a single person voted yes! I also hate that the Yankees got him, because now that they're screwed in getting under the cap they'll likely sign one or two more pitchers too.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Just based on my limited knowledge of the scouting reports as opposed to Yu.. have to say no.. but wouldn't be shocked if we're all backtracking one day.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Herpppp derppp I only said yes so that when the Jays are in contention and then they miss out because they didn't sign that one last pitcher in Tanaka.. you would all bow down to me!
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 We would have seen these same results for Darvish, yet almost everyone says they would have signed him. Good idea for a poll.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I wonder how Darvish feels now that an inferior (but still good pitcher) gets a way better contract than him 2 years later. Then again, it was a result of a change in posting rules. Isn't Greinke's contract the same too? Amazing how inflated contracts are now.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Just based on my limited knowledge of the scouting reports as opposed to Yu.. have to say no.. but wouldn't be shocked if we're all backtracking one day. The results in hindsight don't change the validity of the opinion prior to them. No reason to backtrack. The Rangers took a huge risk and it paid off for them, but it was a lot of money to gamble and could easily have blown up in their faces. This gamble by the Yankees (on a pitcher most people feel is inferior to Darvish), is even bigger. If he puts up the higher end of the (reasonable) numbers people should expect, then he's probably being paid fairly. If he doesn't, that contract could almost be worse for them than the A-Rod one is now.

Good idea for a poll. I think I'll do a poll like this for the remaining free agent pitchers and a few position players like Drew, morales, and Cruz.

I'm just saying it's not one of those things where its Ryan Howard or Pujols territory.. where its obviously god awful before the ink dries.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 This is true too in these cases
vic city Verified Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Good poll. I'm just annoyed that the Dodgers and Cubs didn't beat it. Too rich for us. Pretty much sums it up. I'm just glad this is over with. That and it gives me 1 more (big) reason to hate NYY. Now let's see how AA responds...
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Someone please ban HERPDERP But I truly believe we will regret this signing. Contracts are going up, not down. Maybe 2 years from now we will scoff at this amount - kind of like how we scoffed at contracts for guys like Werth or Jackson.
