Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 NO thank you, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is
TBJ12 Verified Member Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 I know he's looked awful defensively, but I can't be the only one who likes the potential with his bat.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I know he's looked awful defensively, but I can't be the only one who likes the potential with his bat. I think the JAys will see it that way even if I don't.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I agree. They'll do what they did with Thames and Goins and let a small late-season sample dictate the following season's 25 man. Likely with disastrous results. Yes. It's really a foregone conclusion
TBJ12 Verified Member Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 He wasn't even above-average offensively in 400+ PA as a 24-year old in AAA last year. Hes a bad player. I certainly wouldn't label him a "bad player" just yet. He was well above average in the DWL, and put up solid numbers in his short stint with the Jays last season.
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I feel like we've been talking about this guy forever... The fact that he's still only 24 surprises me, but this guy is scrub at best
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 We need to get rid of all the dumb baseball players on this team. Rajai and jpa was a good start.

I really like the potential I see with the bat, but the defense and base running scares me. Barring a better option being brought in, I wouldn't mind seeing what he can do as a DH platoon with Lind. I think it's a better option than someone like Wells. On a side note, Reynolds went to the Brewers on a ML deal. We couldn't give him $1mil to be a platoon???
flafson Verified Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 He might be good with the bat, i doubt AA gives up on him unless it's for a trade.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 At this point, what alternatives are even in place? If it's between him and Pillar for the 4th OF and main right-handed hitter off the bench, I'd probably go with Pillar. The bat might actually be better (very recent results excepted) and the defense is way, way better. Pillar can even play CF in a pinch we're told something Sierra couldn't do in a million years.
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Gose > Pillar >>>>>>>>>> Sierra for me. Yep... I agree
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I want a RH bat to platoon with Lind. But I want that player to have some versatility and defensive value. No to Sierra.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Absolutely not, but don't worry, it'll happen anyway.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 We need to get rid of all the dumb baseball players on this team. Rajai and jpa was a good start. Rajai was a very useful talent when used correctly. And he was the better alternative to Sierra or Pillar (and probably Gose) if only he came at the right price. No need to lump him in with Arencibia who was a definite negative asset.
ILDD Verified Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Sierra can play OF, 1B or DH. I think it's safe to assume that Bautista, Rasmus and Melky are the starting OF and EE gets the 1B position. Lind is at DH so Sierra only has a bench spot. If it's a bench spot then you already have Thole and Izturis so he's fighting for one of the last two spots for him. You need a back up CF and imho Sierra cannot do that job, neither can anyone else on the team right now so he can't have that spot. He's stuck fighting for the last spot on the bench, possibly as a platoon partner for Lind and a pinch hitter for Lind/Rasmsus/Goins/Navarro late in the game Right now I think I'd like to see him make the team, mainly because I really hate 8 man bullpens and him being there means that won't happen.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I want a RH bat to platoon with Lind. But I want that player to have some versatility and defensive value. No to Sierra. Anyone know if Pillar had strong platoon splits in the minors? I'm kind of intrigued by him now that the initial hype has receded. If you look at teams that excel at getting value out of unheralded players (TB, STL), the players they employ look a bit like Pillar. Pillar could theoretically be a line drive hitter with a solid platoon split, solid defense and reportedly, he has the kind of "want" that allows scrubby players to maximize their talent. If he hadn't been so bad in a small sample size last year, he'd probably be a bit of a folk hero among the casuals with a 100 page "Can Pillar stick" thread in these parts. Maybe I'm squinting too hard to see somehting in him but Sierra and Gose are such s*** shows right now that I'm starting to want to like Pillar as a kind of poor man's Reed Johnson.

I'm just glad I don't have to watch guys getting picked off 2nd base to end the game and balls going to the outfield on 360 throws.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I agree. Now that I'm no longer annoyed by the hype he received by casuals like Greenwood calling him the best prospect in the system, I think he could have some value as 4th/platoon OF depending on the splits and defense. I don't think you give him the job outright though. Start him in AAA, call him up as needed, and if he carves out a niche, great. If not it's no big loss. So are you saying you'd run with Gose first then or are you simply saying that another option is needed?
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I'd go Gose as the 4th OF and pinch runner and acquire an above-average RH bat with some positional flexibility to platoon with Lind. Pillar to AAA, Sierra waived and sent to AAA if he clears. Agreed.. even with the swing-and-miss bat.. I think Gose provides more value to the team in both actual and perceived value. Comparing to Pillar I mean
theblujay Verified Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I like Sierra. Just like with Goins I don't get the hate. This team is going nowhere, why do to not want to give him a chance?

That is the exact logic that led to us having to cringe watching Thames play a good chunk of games.. Even if Jays don't win, I hope they keep guys like that off the field at least

theblujay Verified Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 9/10 I'd rather watch a young player be given a chance than pay for some old mediocre player to give us meaningless production.
