connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Im obviously outing myself as an old timer..but ive never been more excited with a guy during his yeats in the minors as i was with CD. Also never been more excited about a mlb start than his April.. Obviously numbers wise it pales to BL's start but meaningless games late season are a different breed imo

He would have way more perceived value a a below average defensive catcher than a below average 1B.

Also never been more excited about a mlb start than his April.. Obviously numbers wise it pales to BL's start but meaningless games late season are a different breed imo pre 94 Delgado was Baseball America 5, Gonzales was 4, Green was 28. pre 95 Delgado lost elligibility (but would of been top 5), Gonzales and Green were 5 and 6. I remember they got off to a good start in 94. Gonzales and Delgado made the team. It all fell apart May or so of 94. Gonzales and Delgado slumped and the team sent them down. I'm not sure the younger generation can even understand how good it looked even goint into 95. They acquired the Cy Young award winner (David Cone) and STILL had 3 big time prospects. The farm was unbelievable and they were coming off of 2 World Series. How it got from that to 20 years in the wilderness is an unexplainable mystery.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 I guess it depends on how much you'd think it would effect the bat over the years I think he's basically Piazza if he sticks at catcher but it's not like I really know. It seems way to esotheric for a mathematical formula to be able to devise either (you wouldn't really have any data to work with for one thing) so who knows?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 positional adjustment. Fangraphs uses a -12.5 run (-1.25 win) adjustment for 1b and -17.5 run adjustment for dh. per 162 games, no per innings lol *600 pa
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 *600 pa It's logical, all adjustment are done based on PA 600 (Positional, Vs Replacement Level Player)

I can distinctly remember back then waiting for BB tonight to come on to see if he hit one out that day. I used to love that show but then it got like MTV where they play like 10secs of a video and move on
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 If he had a few more very good to great seasons for sure but the bar for firstbaseman is super high
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Delgado didn't cheat. Exactly...cause the PED's weren't illegal.
TheEndIsNigh Verified Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 probably not, but all I know is he was robbed of the MVP the year they gave it to aroid and the last place texas rangers, delgado had better numbers and the jays were in wild card contention that year,
Convo Verified Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Teams spot in the standings has nothing to do with MVP. What? Have you not been around baseball ever? It's nearly fundamental that the player is on a play-off bound team... I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 probably not, but all I know is he was robbed of the MVP the year they gave it to aroid and the last place texas rangers, delgado had better numbers and the jays were in wild card contention that year, I enjoyed watching Delgado 2003. Would of loved to see him win an MVP. A-ROD had 8.5 WAR or so, Delgado 6. Delgado a bit better on offense... just a bit. A-rod gold glove short stop, Delgado tin glove 1b. Jays won 86. In Contention until late June. Then crashed to about 15 out by early August. Hovered there the rest of the season. Not really in it the second half. Delgado actually slumped a bit from after the all star break until the last weekend of the season. On the last Thursday he had the 4 homer game, then a grand slam the last day. Not really MVP worthy until last 4 games. Numbers were .295 37 137 after game 158. Awesome last 4 days. Kind of wonder when most guys fill out the ballot. Opposite happened to George Bell. Looked good around day 156. No question. Until Jays got their butt kicked in Detroit. Trammell still lost, Bell won.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Luckily I started watching baseball around 98/99 when Delgado started his peak. The guy was a monster, and when he swung, it probably scared pitchers senseless. Should he be in the hall? If his peak was a little bit longer, or a bit better, then it would be a yes, sadly that is not the case. He's close, but not good enough. Voters may like that he hit a good number of bombs, or that he didn't look like he was on 'roids, which either reasoning is fallacious. But in the unlikely event if he does get voted in, I would be ecstatic fully acknowledging that I'm being a hypocritical twat. I don't care, he was my first baseball hero.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Is Delgado HOF worthy? No.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Will not make it... will hang around for a bit and go the way of Walker.... who is much more deserving BTW Also, not surprised the Jays did not make serious effort to keep Delgado, that year Delgado made lots of dumb mistakes on the field... looked like he didn't care
Chappy Community Moderator Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 The more I look into it, injuries really hurt him, but who knows. Excellent career and as someone said earlier, very quiet humble man. Seemed like a good guy, but he didn't have a HOF type of career. He was definitely one of the best players in the league in his prime, but he wasn't elite.

In 2000 he had a .344/.470/.664 line, good for a 179 wRC+ - which is incredible given the run environment at the time. He was actually better offensively than Bonds that year.

The run environment was huge at that time though. No one deserved the MVP more than Pedro that year. 32 qualified players with a .400+ wOBA and Pedro puts up a .213 OBPA. He held the entire f***ing league to worse stats than what JPA put up last year. It's easily the single greatest pitching season I've ever witnessed (including Gooden's rookie and Clemens 87). People can argue all they want that pitchers don't deserve MVP...but IMO Pedro did that season. Missed 6 starts and put up a 10 WAR.
