Canada clearly outplayed Belgium. You can't give up that goal to end the half; absolutely not acceptable.

Alphonso needs to be better, but I don't think he's fully fit, did not have that typical explosion.

So many chances. Very frustrating result.

Frustrating result, but a very, very good showing overall.

Didn't catch the game but the stats look promising. Canada had a lot of shot attempts, even on corner kicks, and possession was only 53-47.

I saw a twitter highlight of a non-penalty in the first half, Canada was robbed by the ref.

Also saw a highlight of the goal. Pretty dumb lapse in positioning...

Expected Goals:

Canada 2.57

Belgium 0.76

I just saw that on Tim @ Sid, the Belgium Coach admitted Canada played better, just couldn't score.

Whatever formula is used to determine expected goals, doesn't seem to take the quality of the shot into play.

14 shots in the first half, and only two on the net. Like, is the net not big enough?

"Expected goals (or xG) measures the quality of a chance by calculating the likelihood that it will be scored from a particular position on the pitch during a particular phase of play. This value is based on several factors from before the shot was taken. xG is measured on a scale between zero and one, where zero represents a chance that is impossible to score and one represents a chance that a player would be expected to score every single time."

"Stats Perform’s xG model is built using a logistic regression model that is powered by hundreds of thousands of shots from our historical Opta data and incorporates a number of variables that affect the likelihood of a goal being scored, some of the most important of which are listed below:

Distance to the goal

Angle to the goal

One-on-one

Big chance

Body part (e.g., header or foot)

Type of assist (e.g., through ball, cross, pull-back etc)

Pattern of play (e.g., open play, fast break, direct free kick, corner kick, throw-in etc)"

Fair enough, but if Canadian strikers consistently fire wide, or take incredibly weak shots, it isn't factored in.

Canada gets plenty of scoring chances, we just have trouble finishing. Hopefully, we win our next two games.

I'm a big fan of the Belgians. They have a lovely country, are fantastic people and I love to visit. They have some wonderful footballers. But I'll be fully behind the Canadians tonight!

Belgian soccer fans are super nice. When I was at the Euros in 2016 and saw Italy vs. Belgium in Lyon, the night before all their fans were out drinking, having a great time and very friendly even towards Italian fans, even during and after the game. Huge respect!

Canada has to beat Croatia on Sunday or at worst draw. Hope Belgium than beats Morocco which they should and their third game against Croatia. Canada then needs to beat Morocco which can be doable. They could have either tied or beat Belgium today if some of those shots found the back of the net.

I thought you guys were unlucky yesterday. I was hoping for a win, clearly, but I didn't expect you to play as well as you did. Hopefully you can get a draw at least against Croatia. Morocco are beatable.

All you need is a decent striker! Our lad, Laryea, looked good, but I can't see him playing for us in the premier league :(

It was a poor game in that aspect, but Canada typically does not have issues with putting the ball in the net. in 2021 we scored more goals than any other country in the world (Followed by Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands)

As John Herdman said, its now time to go F Croatia.

We have Jonathan David! lol

I was actually surprised Laryea started but yeah he had one of his better games.

It's easy. They just need to put the sphere puck in the net more than the other team.

And you ARE allowed to kick it in?

Famous last words dude

That was an appalling watch

Yup - awful. How Pep decides Stirling isn't good enough for city and plays Foden, but Southgate does the opposite is beyond me.

Still, they needed the win more than us. If wales had won it may have been a different game as we only need not to lose 4-0 now. As A forest fan, that Stoke game 2 years ago still haunts me so we're not out the woods yet.

I think we all got fooled into thinking Canada could match up against anybody after doing so well against the "#2 team in the world".

But it turns out Belgium is just really s***.
