Anybody else think that the comments AA made about going beyond 5 years for only certain players was in reference to Tanaka? The Ohka and Kawasaki signings could just mean nothing, but maybe they do. Dickey and MB will be off the books soon, and beyond that we have no one. Tanaka just makes too much sense, especially after missing on Darvish. Just trying to think positive this holiday season guys. I'll be back to my grinch self in 2014.

i think they just make sense for the organization, kawas a nice depth infielder and ohka is someone there hoping to develop

After the Darvish debacle, you'd figure this team would learn

Darvish bid

Rangers 51.7M - Jays 15M

Hechavarria FA bid

Jays 10M - X team 1M

Someone in the Jays FO prefers Garza to Tanaka. Santana after both.

At this point I'll settle for any one of them. Dammit my expectations have dropped in the last 6 weeks.

Well that guy should be fired, there is a ton of injury risk with garza and is 30. Tanaka is durable and 26.

There will be 25 teams that bid 20 million... Then someone will spend 100 million.. He is not worth 120 million.

I think he would for sure be worth that, on and off field

For Comparison, Yu Darvish had a 1.44ERA his last year in Japan, 10.7k/9 1.40BB/9.

He has been one of the best pitchers in baseball over the last two years since he arrived.

Tanaka last year had a 1.27ERA 7.8 K/9 and 1.40BB/9.

K rates are pretty far off, but Darvish would definitely be worth $120M.

Nah. He'll require Tommy John after his second start. #bluejaycurse

Maybe it's not a curse? Maybe it's our crummy training staff and turf which are both very fixable.... nothing seems to have changed though

WEDNESDAY, 3:32pm: Tanaka's posting will begin Thursday morning and be completed by January 24th at 4pm CT, a source tells Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News (on Twitter). Teams can place their bids - up to $20MM, of course - starting tomorrow morning (link).

Looks like there is a 30 days time table in which he can sign, i guess it will take longer than i thought though it seems like he can pick someone earlier than that.

There's no way the turf has any bearing on TJS for pitchers.

For the Jays to make the playoffs they need to have a top 5 pitching staff in team ERA and they need to finish ahead of at least 3 AL East teams. Assuming the bullpen is as good as it was last year and Dickey and Beuhrle are as good as they are last year - I am not sure how ONE starter is going to improve us from something like 12th to 4th.

This team needs a rotation that is better than all or all but one of NY, BOS, TB, and BAL. A rotation of Tanaka, Dickey, Beuhrle, (Morrow for 10 starts until his arm blows up), Happ and Rogers.

Where does that rank exactly? Even with Tanaka it's not enough. Out of Tanaka, Garza, Santana, Jiminez the Jays would need TWO of those to have a credible starting rotation and Morrow slotting in the fifth spot with Happ the long man to step in when Morrow is gone by the 110 innings pitched mark. Maybe Hutchison - but maybe not and he ain't coming back after TJS to give us 200 innings. Garza is nice an all but also injury prone and would be my dead last pick out of the four.

And the only guy everyone is high on is Tanaka but reports are he doesn't miss bats and won't against MLB hitters. He'll likely be a number 3. $20million a year for a number 3 seems high to me and we already have such a pitcher in Beuhrle. Jiminez is an ex CY Young winner with big K numbers but also walks everyone and Santana - uggh I'd rather the guitar player to do the anthems each game.

I'd stand pat - do nothing and wait till next year - by then Stroman will be entrenched in the rotation, Beurhle and Dickey will probably still be fine - their stuf doesn;t kill their arms. Maybe Hutchison has bounced back and that leaves one spot to get one pitcher.

"We put in what we felt was a competitive bid for Tanaka."

Week later we find out AA bid $1M.

two looneys, 3 quarters and a wad of lint from AA's pocket. he blew his budget last year and is too gun shy to go to Rogers for more money.

lol........you just figured that out? It's all about negotiations and where he essentially wants to play.

I've been really busy since baseball season ended. completely missed that. any team who can hang out a very good deal can pick him up. this is a lot better deal for the player and the agent. lol

it's more like European soccer. most players have a buy out clause in their contract. it's usually some ridiculous sum, but at least you know the price. there are players that have 70 million dollar transfer fee buyout clauses.

Gareth Bale, this last summer, went from Tottenham to real mardid and the transfer fee was 121 million dollars. D-O-L-L-A-R-S

Plus his six year 521 thousand a week... (27M/yr)contract.

and people think baseball is expensive.

Those buy out clauses aren't common, only a few very elite has them.

Baseball is more expensive, if you go by average team payroll in 2013 it was 105mil.

If you take the richest 30 soccer teams in Europe, i doubt you'll come anywhere near it.

So far the team that is breaking all those spending records is Real Madrid and their current payroll is at around 156mil.

There are 4 top leagues though, I would think that's the difference.

actually a lot of players have buyout clauses. the difference being that players who dont excel will never have their buyout clause used, so we dont hear about them, but it is fairly common. players can have clauses in their contract that say they can ask for a transfer if their team doesn't make it to the Champions league even. it is very different from how business is done in North America.

teams will negotiate the transfer fee when the player's contract is close to running out. IE: 2 years left. A player who only has a year left on their contract is considered of lesser value in the transfer fee because the team with the short contract is seen as being in a position to take it now or not get any return. it's not often that a top player becomes a FA.

it's also fairly common for teams to come to terms with the player and void a contract and give the player a bigger and longer one to keep top players on their side. so if a player has a 2 year deal making 200,000 dollars a week, a team might come back and offer them a change to a 5 year deal at 300,000+ per week.

This is kinda f***ing dumb. I understand it's a process but christ, and ask "who isn't in?". Obviously it's going to be $20M, and a question of who isn't interested rather than who is.

The whole thing is dumb. With the posting fee he likely ends up costing around $50M more than the next best SP left on the market. If he goes for 6/100 plus the 20M posting fee, it's probably a smarter move to just sign Garza/Santana/Ubaldo for 5/75.

I like the idea of Tanaka, but the more I think about it, I can see AA pushing hard for one of the other 3 when it's all said and done.
