The Tigers must be hoping that the prospect of playing on a winning team is more valuable to Price in next year's negotiations. Scherzer has all but stated he only cares about the dollars (and I'm not blaming him).

Illitch would be happy to go back to bottom of the MLB payroll if it doesn't affect the rest of his business ventures.

With Sherzer to the Nats...could we trade for Strasburg? Nats did say they would look to trade him if they signed Sherzer

They said that? I always thought of Strasburg as a Nat, hard to imagine him going elsewhere

The Nats have all the leverage in trade negotiations.

They're going to ask the world for him.

Stroman, Sanchez, Pompey, e.t.c.

Strasburg has two years of control left.

They'd want Toronto's entire farm system in return, and they'd be justified in asking for it.

The only Nats pitcher who makes sense for the Jays (i.e. he's cheap as hell) is Roark, but I'd think they'd keep him and trade one of the impending FA's instead.

Nats are smart. Sign the best pitcher, then try to trade excess pitching to a team that can't really sign free agents like the Blue Jays. Just wish we'd use the same strategy so we could keep our prospects.

If they're paying him over 200M for 7 years (with significant deferrals, which could make it a LOT worse) as the latest report suggests, then I'd take issue with the smart part...

They are in win now mode as well. I don't know what the details are on the contact in terms of no trade list, but what would stop them from trading him in 4 years from now and get prospects back? But if they are able to unload another pitcher for more prospects right now how can you not like the deal? Just trade Scherzer in 4-5 years for more prospects, there will always be a team willing to take him who will be in win now mode at that time. Apparently there are a lot of 'deferrals' as well.
