Deteriorated? Kemp was the second best hitter in baseball in the second half of 2014.

Not sure that's an excuse for a sub-par season. Stangstag is right, he has deteriorated to some extent, just like Juan Francisco is not defined by his month of May.

Deals are conditional to physicals. This has become the absolute norm in baseball since Gord Ash forgot to make that a condition in the Mike Sirotka deal and MLB found that the Jays not the ChiSox were at fault because the Jays didn't do their due dilligence. Seems to me that the Padres are just doing what we all wished Gord Ash would have done at the time. They found something they didn't know about. Nobody knew about the arthritis in the hips. This wasn't disclosed, it wasn't even known. This isn't some previously know thing that they are blowing out of proportion to gain leverage. This is new data that has come out following the physical and it's very meaningful data. Are they supposed to just go ahead and say well "it's business as usual". How would you feel about that if you were a Padres fan? It's all about risk/reward. The reward is pretty much the same for the Padres but the risk has just gone up. That plainly and undoubtedly impacts the value of the player. It just does. Say you thought Kemp had a 70% chance of being the player from the second half last year. Well maybe that chance is down to 55% or 45% or whatever. That decrease in probability is absolutely worth something. It's just not the same trade anymore. It simply isn't.

I can't imagine the deal going through unless major revisions are made

He went from superstar to below-average player with a bad shoulder and arthritic hips.

I can't recall too often that a player fails his physical upon a trade or signing. This certainly is interesting. Hopefully the deal goes through. If not, the Padres could have two catchers and that would suck as it would add supply to the catcher's market. Makes Navaro less attractive. :(

It's happened a couple of times with the Yankees. Greg Vaughn failed a physical when traded to the Yankees and a deal was nixed. I also remember an Expos closer (Urbina?) failing his physical and his deal to the Yankees being voided.

It probably happens a bit more often than you think because with lots of minor deals you don't really even hear about them until the official announcement (or at least the day of the official announcement).

The O's nixed a couple of FA signings recently due to medicals.

The Napoli FA signing got nixed because of his degenerative hip (But I think he's ended up making more money than he would have on the 3 year contract anyway!).

Didn't one happen just last year or so? I think it was Balfour and the O's publicly poo-pooed his back or his neck or something? Terrible business etiquette.

People can have their own opinions on if this was on-side or not, but I think it smells.

I find it similar to if a team agreed to sign free agent X, but after that agreement found out they were in the running for free agent Y. They then delay actually agreeing to the deal with player X while "reviewing medical records". They end up signing player Y and go back to player X and say they don't like the medicals, our new offer is this lower number.

Sure player X is free to go back to the next highest bidder, but is has costs him time and maybe other opportunities are gone at this point.

It could be totally innocent with one having nothing to do with the other, but it makes me raise an eyebrow.

This was my response on the last page to your initial post about this:

If you feel your team needs a player, you don't politely wait to finish another deal first before you begin pursuit. That's like the misunderstanding most people post about "concentrating" on getting a RP or a 2B. If that's how business was ever conducted, the Jays wouldn't have landed Donaldson. It's the Padres' prerogative to consider every avenue and act accordingly. If the Myers deal fell through, they'd be double screwed if they "honoured" the Dodgers by pre-maturely ending Kemp discussions (or vice versa).

I tend to agree more with your take now, though, with the leaked info about the arthritis. If it was the Padres who very foolishly let the info slip out after they'd had a week to mull it and after they'd swung a three-way to land Wil Myers+, then I'd be very wary of doing business with them. OTOH, if the info leaked some other way my opinion is probably as soft as it initially was. It depends on who was out of line on the medical info here, but this could very well make the San Diego execs look very, very bad.

Royals Sign Kris Medlen

By Steve Adams [December 18, 2014 at 2:12pm CST]

The Royals announced that they have signed right-hander Kris Medlen to a two-year deal that contains a mutual option for the 2017 season.

I'm really surprised at the salaries significant injury pitchers are getting this winter. Medlen's isn't as bad as some of the others, but still...

It happened last year. Santos i think failed his medical.

Huge news. Might even be thread worthy.

Didn't the owner say he would explore selling the team and moving it if the stadium deal got rejected?

Edit: here's a good read about the entire thing http://www.fieldofschemes.com/category/mlb/tampa-bay-rays/

Seems that they would have to buy out the lease with St Petersburg before even talking about a new stadium elsewhere even with a new owner. Although if he sells the team I am sure the price would be reflected with the buyout.

Two separate trades.

Anderson (to Jays) - Gentry (to A's) - Santos (to Rangers) (Anderson failed)

Kinsler - Santos + Arencibia + ?? (Kinsler blocked)

Damn Kinsler. If he didn't block that we would have been stacked now, as the Jays still would have the assets to get Donaldson + Saunders. :( Though I am suspecting that there may have been a prospect in that deal (Sanchez, Stroman or Hutch) we were unaware of. I mean, the Rangers aren't THAT stupid are they?
